I recently read on this site that when giving to MSU a donor can direct his/her donation to coaches salaries for a particular sport. So I went on the official MSU athletic site and did that. It later occurred to me that years ago our legislators proposed starting a lottery in MI which was to be voted on. Voters were told the money would be used for education and the establishment of a lottery was approved. It is my understanding that as lottery money flowed into the state coffers and on to support education, general funds formerly earmarked for education were gradually withdrawn such that lottery money did not really make the difference voters were led to believe. That made me wonder if the same happens to our donations to our coaches. If for instance, our football coaching staff has a combined salary of $8,000,000 and we donate $1,000,000 directed for coaches salaries is that added to the $8,000,000 or is some of the original $8,000,000 repurposed? Anyone know? Thanks
