Eleven female college students filed an amended complaint in a federal lawsuit accusing the University of Michigan of allowing former co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss to coach in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl despite knowing he had hacked their private accounts.
The amended complaint names former head coach Jim Harbaugh, ex-president Santa Ono, and athletic director Warde Manuel, alleging they ignored warnings and failed to protect student-athletes.
Specifically, a UM staffer reportedly witnessed Weiss accessing private data between Dec. 21–23, 2022, and alerted university officials before the Dec. 31 game. Weiss now faces 24 federal charges for hacking and stealing intimate data from over 3,000 athletes nationwide.
The lawsuit claims UM prioritized football success over student safety, concealed Weiss’s identity from victims, and fostered a culture of neglect. Plaintiffs allege leadership either knew about the misconduct or turned a blind eye, failing to provide basic oversight or transparency to protect non-football athletes from harm.
