I said after two weeks on the job that he was the most hands-on, high-motor WRs coach I'd seen at MSU. He was just different. He was into it, running drills I'd never seen before, and focusing on some fine, fine, fine details unlike I'd seen before.
I remember one drill in which he was kneeling down staring at a small square foot of grass during a WR drill. Each WR would run a route, come to that part of the grass, and cut and go about their route. He stared and focused on that patch of grass to determine which WRs were cutting the way he wanted them to cut. I was pretty taken aback by that. That in itself didn't mean he was a great coach, but he was different. And he got A LOT done during practices, running and instructing at high RPMs.
I suspect he handles other parts of his job that way too, based on the success he had at CSU and the success he has had at Florida so far.
What he did as a WRs coach didn't guarantee he would be a great head coach. But it did guarantee, to me, that he was different, and one to watch.
Not a surprise that an NFL assistant job opened up to him, when he left MSU for the Raiders.
Right now, he's up comfortable on Ole Miss, but they still have some work to do.

He was always real good-natured, funny and good to us at SpartanMag.
I bumped into him just before a press conference in Tampa at the Capital One Bowl. He acted like he was happy to see me. I always found him to be a good guy, who really knew offense.
