Caleb Weiand, Max Vanadia Punch Ticket to NCAA Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. – Two Spartans punched tickets to the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Saturday at the 2025 B1G Wrestling Championships at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Redshirt freshman 125-pounder Caleb Weiand and redshirt freshman heavyweight Max Vanadia each secured their trips to Philadelphia, marking their first career NCAA qualifications.
In total, six Michigan State wrestlers advanced to compete on day two of the B1G Championships. Weiand and Vanadia will each wrestle for seventh place on Sunday.
Redshirt junior Andy Hampton is wrestling in the 133-pound 11th place bracket, redshirt sophomore Ceasar Garza is wrestling in the 174-pound 9th place bracket, redshirt junior Luke Daly is wrestling in the 184-pound 9th place bracket and redshirt freshman Remy Cotton is wrestling in the 197-pound 11th place bracket.
The B1G is allocated 10 NCAA bids at 133, eight bids at 174, eight bids at 184 and 10 bids at 197.
Weiand dropped a tightly contested round one bout to Indiana's No. 20-ranked Jacob Moran but bounced back in consolations defeating Maryland's Tyler Garvin (5-0) and No. 15-ranked Joey Cruz of Iowa, 10-5 to guarantee his spot at the NCAA Championships. After a major decision loss to No. 17-ranked Nicolar Rivera of Wisconsin in the third round of consolations, Weiand advanced to Sunday's seventh-place match.
Vanadia needed just one win on Saturday to secure his spot in Philadelphia. After a round one loss to No. 10-ranked Luke Luffman of Illinois, Vanadia defeated Northwestern's Dirk Morley, 17-6, in wrestlebacks. A medical forfeit by Rutgers' Yaraslou Slavikouski helped Vanadia's cause, guaranteeing him a Top 8 finish in Evanston.
Hampton dropped his first two bouts of the day but avenged an earlier loss by defeating Northwestern's Massey Odiotti, 2-0. Garza rebounded by pinning Michigan's No. 30-ranked Joseph Walker in the first period. Daly picked off Purdue's Orlando Cruz twice on the day, both by decision.
