The NHL Draft officially kicks off at 7:00 p.m. tonight on ESPN. The first round will take place tonight with the remaining rounds taking place tomorrow beginning at 11:00 a.m. on ESPN+. All times Eastern.
For those keeping track of their NHL team, the Chicago Blackhawks select first and are expected to draft 17-year-old sensation Connor Bedard out of the WHL. Michigan’s Adam Fantilli is expected to go second to Anaheim or third to Columbus. Meanwhile, Detroit has two first-round picks at No. 9 and No. 17. Four Michigan State players/prospects that are draft eligible are either projected to be selected or a fringe selection.
Defenseman Maxim Štrbák (USHL) is expected to be drafted in the second round. I am actually anticipating Detroit to select him based on team needs and where Štrbák is projected to go. Goaltender Trey Augustine (NTDP) could be selected anywhere from early-to-late second round. Montréal was rumored to be in the mix for either Augustine or Michael Hrabel (USHL) but traded away picks No. 31 and No. 37 to Colorado for Alex Newhook this week. Its next pick would be its own third-round selection.
Left wing Michael DeAngelo (USHL) should be taken somewhere in the late rounds, maybe in the sixth or seventh round. MSU’s fringe selection this year is center A.J. Lacroix (BCHL) who will likely not be selected. Both DeAngelo and Lacroix will not join MSU’s roster until 2024-25.
