I do not remember the poster who said it and it seemed fairly innocuous at the time, but recent events have made me come back to it. The poster mentioned that Mel basically told all of the coaches to spend the majority of their time on recruiting vs game planning and preparation. This may have been mentioned in a thread about Ron Burton and why he left.

Regardless, it seems like there are some quality control issues (a Jim Comp phrase) going with the team overall. When is the last time they came out and looked ready to play? I was so sure MSU would show up strong against Minnesota because the issues were plain to see and I thought Mel was pissed. Instead they came out even more flat than the Washington game where they looked terrible from the beginning.

As others have mentioned, I think we have traded our good teachers (Tressel, Burton) for recruiting specialists (BTJ) and frankly some unknowns like Coleman (I have been on the record as STRONGLY against this hire, mainly because I think Burton was the best assistant we had other than Tressel). I still love the move to bring in Brandon Jordan but he needed to be paired with a strong, experienced teacher who could manage the whole line.

Mistakes were made and Mel needs to correct them in the offseason.
