I'm an old dude who remembers when the Best Man was merely required to propose a simple toast at the reception. Somehow over the years the Best Man toast transitioned into a speech and now judging from the weddings I've been to over the last couple of decades the Best Man felt obligated to be an entertainer with mixed results at best. I went to a wedding recently were the Best Man's speech was so painful for the audience a woman who is a former coworker of the bride stood up and asked the Best Man to stop.

I had left the room prior to this because it was so awkward listening to the would be Don Rickles roast the groom with a selection of jabs that might have been funny to a room full of drunken bachelor party attendees but were lame and wholly inappropriate at the wedding reception. I left my table and retreated to the men's room during his lengthy monologue where I found a bunch of the groom's friends lamenting the awful speech. After listening to them talk about it I suggested one of them ought to tell him to wrap it up.

I mention this here because one of you young guys might be called upon to serve as Best Man or a Groomsmen in a wedding. If you do so I advise you to save the mockery and ribald humor for the bachelor party and to keep the Best Man speech warm, light and above all short. Thank the groom for the honor, his friendship, remark on his good fortune in finding such a wonderful bride then raise your glass and wish them great happiness together and sit down. If you crave an opportunity to try your hand at stand up find a night club don't make an ass of yourself like this doofus.
