I am not asking this question because I believe they did (or didn't). I think it is a fascinating question.
Going into the 2015 season, the Tigers had Ian Kinsler at 2B, a dependable veteran, with a good bat and above average defensive abilities, who they had acquired the year before from the Texas Rangers for Prince Fielder.
In the minors, they had Devon Travis, one of their best prospects, who had posted eye popping numbers.
The Tigers also had a huge hole in centerfield, having traded Austin Jackson to the Mariners in the David Price deal.
The Tigers decided to trade Travis to the Toronto Blue Jays for CF Anthony Gose, a great fielder and fast CF, who had not produced offensively at this point in his young career.
I thought the Tigers would have kept Travis and traded Kinsler to save payroll and get younger.
Now, Travis and Gose have both gotten off to fast starts in the opening few days of this season. It will be interesting if the Tigers get out of this deal what they hoped for in December and do not regret giving away Travis. It is way too early to know either way. Both players have tremendous potential and could become impact players.
I imagined Travis and Jose Iglesias forming a 2B/SS combination for the next 10 years in the mold of Whitaker and Trammell.
I will be watching this deal unfold. I openly wonder if the Tigers made the right move. Gose looks good and Kinsler is an excellent 2B. We shall see.
