I saw a story on Yahoo this weekend about a girl rowing a high tech boat acorss the Pacific. No motor, no sail, just oars. Granted, she'll be using the Pacific currents to help her along (that's why she left from Japan), but still, that's pretty ballsey.
The story, in and of itself, was interesting, but what really got my attention were the pictures of the girl. Apparently she's an accomplished rower, and this isn't her first rodeo, so I expected to see a strapping woman in the prime of her life with massive arms and shoulders and close to zero body fat. Wrong. Now the muscles may have been there, but it was hard to tell, because, and how can I put this politely, she was chubby. Looked to be at least 40 pounds overweight. The pictures of her sitting in the boat were not flattering.
Maybe it's just me, but if I was going to do a massively taxing, 3 month endurance event, I'd want to be in peak physical condidion. Perhaps the girl is looking at this adventure as a healthier alternative to "lap band" surgery to drop some weight. Or perhaps she felt the need to add 40+ pounds, so she wouldn't shrivel away to nothing on the trip. Whatever the reason(s), I'm looking lookig forward to seeing the "after" pictures when she finishes the trip in September.
