During the predictions segment, each of the Gameday personalities do their predictions: Howard, Herbstreit and Pollack.
When it came time to pick the winner of the Vanderbilt vs Hawaii game, Rece kicked it off by saying, with a smile, "There is someone in the Hawaii administration who has said that Vanderbilt has NO IDEA what they're getting into tonight."
Okay, that seemed innocuous enough. Just an administrator expressing confidence in his team.
Then after all three guys picked Vanderbilt, Davis came back with his lone prediction of the day:
"I'm going to take Hawaii and the +9 and a half, and I'm going to warn Vanderbilt from years and years of staying up late and watching games from the island (while shaking his head negatively with a smile), Vandy: you'd better take care of it early because if it gets late straaaaaaange things happen. Forces rain down on the men in striped shirts."
All three guys laughed and kind of nodded, knowing what he was talking about. But no one gave any specifics.

For those of you old enough to remember, this harkens back to MSU's loss at Hawaii under John L Smith back in the mid 2000s. Smith, who was never afraid to make ammusing and sometimes outlandish comments, basically told those of us in the media during a roundtable interviews that he didn't trust the officials heading into the game, said something like, "I know what goes on, on the rock." (the rock being the island of oahu, or the islands in general).
(Smith had experience coaching in the western half of the united states, among coaches who played Hawaii, including himself).
Anyway, we all know how some of those strange calls went sideways that night, late into the night.
Sometimes officials have bad games. Sometimes, once in a great while, it makes you wonder. But when John L Smith PREDICTED it would happen before the game, that made it seem all the more strange.
And some of you may remember that when Michigan State was getting unfavorable call after unfavorable call during that game, Smith just smiled and shook his head. He didn't even get mad. It was like he was watching the playing of a WWE script and there was nothing he could do about it.

Anyway, those of us who watched that game might have our own theories and recollections about that particular game.
But I was surprised Rece Davis went that deep into it with those comments that he made just a few minutes ago, and specifically mentioned "the men in striped shirts."
Just thought it was interesting. Of course it doesn't PROVE that something shady went down in that Hawaii vs Michigan State game years ago. But there is a preponderance of paranoia out there for some reason.
