As has already been posted, MSU introduced its new captains after practice today: Shilique Calhoun, Jack Allen and Darien Harris.
Calhoun is a second-year captain.
Harris is regarded as the surprise choice. But his teammates weren't surprised.
"He's always been one of our hardest workers and most-respected guys," Allen said.
"I feel great for Darien," Calhoun said. "He deserves this, and he'll be a great captain."
Said Harris: "This is an incredibly humbling and amazing honor that I take with a lot humility. I’m extremely proud of Shilique and Jack, too. To be able to call myself a captain with those two guys, who came in with me in 2011, is amazing.
"Leadership has always been important to me. For us to go where we want to go, the seniors have lead by example on and off the field and that’s something that I’ve always tried to do."
Senior Connor Cook is conspicuously absent from the list of captains, failing to be voted in for a second straight year. Calhoun, Allen, Harris and head coach Mark Dantonio had very similar answers were asked about Cook not being voted a captain.
"He's still a captain of this team," Calhoun said. "We all consider him a captain."
Cook has been a member of MSU's 12-person leadership council, known as the Eagles, for two years. Having been voted in by teammates as an Eagle, he was eligible to be named a captain. However, Allen, Calhoun and Harris earned the most votes.
Dantonio said there have been times in the past when he has staged two or three votes to make sure the right three captains were selected. Dantonio said this time they only voted once because the outcome was clear.
Dantonio said he prefers having three captains and rotating a fourth from week-to-week, "so that more people get a chance to lead."
