Remy Cotton Earns Upset in Wrestling’s Loss at #12 Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Redshirt freshman Remy Cotton earned an upset at 197 pounds, but Michigan State fell to No. 12-ranked Rutgers, 28-7, on Friday night at Jersey Mike's Arena.
MSU moves to 4-8 overall and 0-7 in B1G duals while the Scarlet Knights improved to 13-5 (5-3 B1G). The Spartans will conclude conference action on Sunday when No. 19-ranked Michigan comes to Jenison Field House for a 12:00 p.m. dual on Big Ten Network.
Brothers Sean Larkin and Marty Larkin appeared in the lineup for Michigan State, marking the first time that two brothers have competed alongside one another in a dual for MSU since Shane and Shwan Shadaia on January 31, 2016 in a 19-15 win over Northwestern. Sean made his collegiate dual debut on Friday and Marty bumped up to 184 pounds for the second time in his career.
Rutgers secured Friday night's dual winning the first eight bouts of the evening to take a 28-0 lead.
A number of matchups went the distance with the 125 pound and 157 pound matches going to sudden victory. Redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand fell 4-1 in the extra period while redshirt sophomore Braden Stauffenberg dropped a 5-2 decision in sudden victory.
At 149 pounds, redshirt freshman Clayton Jones III took a first period lead over No. 19-ranked Conner Harer. Jones used a blast double to put Harer on his back for a full set of near-fall swipes, taking an 8-3 lead into period two. Harer earned four back points to open the second to cut into Jones' advantage, later picking up a pair of takedowns to defeat Jones, 14-10.
Ranked No. 26 at 197 pounds by InterMat, Cotton got back into the win column on Friday with a major decision upset over No. 18-ranked John Poznanski. It's the highest ranked victory of the season for Cotton.
Cotton turned in an all-around effort in the upset, tallying three takedowns and over three minutes of riding time.
Redshirt freshman heavyweight Max Vanadia ended the night with a victory for MSU, posting his fourth-consecutive win in a 1-0 decision over Rutgers' John O'Donnell. O'Donnell chose down in the third period, but Vanadia rode him for the whole 2:00 to pick up a riding time point.
