I was really impressed with what Wisconsin's new d-coordinator did with that defense last year, as they made the transition to a 3-4.

Also impressed that the d-coordinator stayed at UW rather than following Peterson to Oregon State.

But the UW defense took a hit this week in practice:

MADISON - Inside linebacker was among the positions of concern heading into fall camp for the University of Wisconsin football team. It became even more so during Wednesday’s practice when the Badgers lost both of their starters at the position.

During a leverage drill, Leon Jacobs went down with a right foot injury. The junior stayed down for a few minutes while the drill continued before being helped off the field. He wasn’t able to put any weight on the foot. Jacobs returned to the field on crutches and later wearing a walking boot.

Then the other starting inside linebacker – T.J. Edwards – left practice less than 15 minutes later with a left shoulder injury. After getting checked out, the redshirt freshman had his left arm was put in a sling.

The injuries left true freshman Nick Thomas and redshirt sophomore Keelon Brookins as the first-team inside linebackers. Graduate transfer Kellen Jones, redshirt freshman Ryan Connelly, and true freshmen Chris Orr and Alex Ingold also got reps.

Also being lost to injury was Jeremey Patterson, who suffered a lower leg injury but left the field under his own power. And the heat claimed defensive end Chikwe Obasih late in practice.
