SAN DIEGO – Michigan State softball defeated Yale on Friday, March 10, 12-6, in its opening game at the Torero Classic hosted by University of San Diego. The Spartans were initially scheduled to play two games on Friday afternoon, but rain washed out MSU's game against Western Carolina. The game against WCU will not be made up.

The Spartans improve to 8-12 on the season following the win over Yale.

Spartan Stats
Sophomore Faith Guidry (1-2) started in the circle for MSU and pitched a complete game, the first of her career. Guidry struck out three, allowing four earned runs in seven innings in the circle.

Fifth-year Jessica Mabrey hit a pair of home runs for the Spartans on Friday marking the 29th time a Spartan has done so and the first since Caitie Ladd did it on May 3, 2019. Mabrey finished the game 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, a walk, five RBIs and three runs scored.

Sophomore Macy Lee joined Mabrey with three hits, coming around to score twice. Junior Collette Allen, junior Alexis Barroso and senior Kendall Kates each had a pair of hits for the Spartans. Barroso and junior Jenae Wash each had two RBIs. Freshman Hailey Bila stole a pair of bases.

The Spartans had 15 total hits going 15-for-33 (.454) at the plate.

Scoring Summary
Mabrey led things off for the Spartans with a lead-off home run that gave the Spartans a quick advantage. With two runners on, Barroso added another run to the board for MSU after her bloop single scored Allen from third. Bila later scored on a double steal attempt to give MSU a 3-0 lead.

A two-out dropped fly ball allowed Yale to put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first, cutting MSU's lead to one run.

Mabrey led off the third inning the same way she led off the first, hitting her second long ball of the game to give MSU a 4-2 lead. Doloszycki doubled down the left field line later in the frame to move Michigan State's advantage back to three runs.

Yale's two-out bases-clearing double tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth.

Barroso gave the Spartans the lead once again in the fifth as her single into left scored Lee from second base. Wash's one-out single to center brought two more MSU runners around to score in the inning. Mabrey plated three more in the inning on a double to the wall before Allen singled her home to put MSU up seven, 12-5.
