They consistently characterize him as not smiling, dour, serious, etc. I'd call it intense, driven and focused, but ok, that's their prerogative.
But if you watched the recent All Access, you saw that intensity and focus. And then it transforms. Instantly. To a still intense, but smiling, happy, joking MD. When? As soon as he was around his players. MD talks about how much he truly enjoys being around them. You can see it in that video--in the meeting room, when they are taking the practice field, etc. And of course, we saw it in the Rose Bowl locker room celebrations.
Players, parents, families all talk about what a players coach/advocate/etc. he truly is. And how he's helping them become men, prepared for life. With a relationship with him for life. Truth.
Usually those coaches fall short on quality control/toughness/accountability/discipline. Yet, MD's program is built on those things. Players say practices and the competition in practices is much tougher than many games. And they talk about how you WILL do the right things on and off the field in an MD program.
I think part of his success is the RARE ability to be a players Coach, and at the same time, build toughness, discipline and high levels of accountability.
Pretty darn rare, I'd say. Why isn't that players Coach/lifetime advocate side of MD getting more media ink?
Other than Comp, who has been all over this.
