As we waited for Izzo to come talk to the press on Monday evening following MSU's win over Western, I was curious how salty Coach would be following the win. MSU did get an 18-point victory, but it was not the most beautiful win of the year so far. I think the answer was that he was "medium salty." He clearly was not happy with the Spartans, but he wasn't depressed either. He was still probably more upbeat than at any time over the last three years. He was annoyed with his team today, but not angry.
He also had a lot of nice things to say about the crowd and his opponent, especially about the return of DJ Stephens.
Here is also a bonus quote about Coen Carr, who had a quiet, but still productive day. Carr has also now hit 14 consecutive free throws. He is well on his way to being a true crowd favorite, not because of the dunks, but because of who the kid is and how hard he works. He is a perfect Izzo player. Perfect.
"Coen is a human highlight reel and an unbelievable kid," Izzo said. "I love him. He was the one guy today that every huddle was trying to get our guys going, I mean, he saw what was missing."
If Carr is still on the roster next year, I suspect he will be a captain. He gets it.
