It appears that UGA QB JT Daniels will enter the transfer portal after meeting with Kirby Smart this weekend. Daniels has another year of eligibility remaining.
Daniels looks to be the first domino to fall — but likely not the last — in the Bulldogs’ annual quarterback room shuffle.
Stetson Bennett 4, the former walk-on who will led the UGA to the national championship is next on the watch list. There are many questions if Bennett will return to UGA for a sixth season of eligibility - or transfer for his final year of eligibility. Bennett made a very curious comment this weekend at the UGA championship celebration - that he wants “to see if he can trust the decisions” of UGA’s coaches".
Could it be that Bennett wants a guarantee from UGA’s coaching staff that he’ll be the unquestioned starter for 2022? Bennett may want Smart to promise that UGA won’t “recruit over him” – and sign a transfer quarterback this offseason.
UGA is very aggressively recruiting former Oklahoma QB Caleb Williams. But, it appears that Williams is headed to USC.
Or, Smart could bypass the portal and pick his 2022 quarterback out of his existing room of excellent QB talent -- which includes 5-star Brock Vandagriff, 4-Star Carson Beck, and incoming 4 Star Gunner Stockton. Beck seems to be the odd man out and is another to watch.
My strong feeling is that Smart and staff will go with the "chosen one" Brock Vandagriff, think Trevor Lawrence's size, athleticism and skill set. Smart, Monken and staff have known Vandagriff for years. He is from Prince Avenue HS in Athens - it's a HS where many UGA coaches and former players have sent their kids to play for Vandagriff's father over the years.
Vandagriff has spent countless hours at UGA prior to his early enrollment being "coached" in the UGA system by Smart and Monken. And, now former UGA QB and assistant coach Mike Bobo has re-joined Smart's staff. Bobo is UGA royalty and married into the Vince Dooley family. He's very close to both Vandagriff and Gunnar Stockton.
And, on top of all that QB talent, 5 Star QB Arch Manning and the Manning family have been spending a lot of time in Athens and around the UGA coaches / program. That could shape up to be a UGA vs. 'Bama battle with Clemson and Ole Miss on the outside. And LSU completely out of the picture.
