I have heard that Michigan State assistant coach Jon Borovich remains a top candidate for the open Central Michigan men’s basketball head coach position and things seem to be getting close in the Chippewas’ search.
I have a connection that is close to the search on CMU’s side, and the source tells me it is essentially down to two finalists: Borovich and another current assistant coach elsewhere with some ties to the CMU program, but I was asked to keep the name and current school of the other candidate quiet.
It seems as though the vast majority of important voices at Central Michigan are pushing hard for Borovich. He is a CMU alum who played for the Chippewas from 1997 until 2001. Two of the programs most accomplished players, Chris Kaman and Dan Majerle (who both played in the NBA), are among the names who are vouching Borovich for the job. Borovich and Kaman played together for a season in 2000-2001.
As mentioned, the other candidate also has a history with the program and has some support, but it sounds like the overwhelming majority is favoring Borovich.
It is important to note this is all coming from CMU s side. I have no direct intel into Borovich’s thought process or interest level as of right now, but as an alum, it would make a lot of sense for him to want to take the job. However, staying at Michigan State as an assistant coach under Tom Izzo is always a strong option as well.
It is unclear what the timeline is here exactly, but the expectation is that things should get moving very soon.
