I'd read Barbara Tuchman's magisterial "Guns of August" as to the background before WWI (JFK, btw, mentioned this book as a reason that compelled him to go slow on the Cuban Missile Crises) , but had not read a really good book on WWI proper (that I can remember, anyway lol) and I'm teaching that unit now.
It's a relatively short book (462 pages) but it's packed full of great information and beautifully written.
