FOOTBALL Hot Take on the Loss - Serious Questions

What a frustrating loss. We come out of the gates blazing and miss a FG. Then duplicate with another drive and a TD. Then we went into a shell of conservativeness rest of the game.

1. How do we not game plan more targets to Marsh? Especially with their #1 DB out

2. Why do we run the ball up the middle repeatedly when it’s not working?

3. Why did we not call timeout on the first drive in 4th down? Why did we call a pass play in our own territory with little time left leading to a turnover?

4. How did our D not exploit one of absolute worst passing teams in all of FBS? With zero pressure?

5. Why the onside kick? Bizarre

6. Why did the team that played Iowa look nothing like the team that played Michigan?

RECRUITING Priority flip target eyes official visit

Caught up with in-state defensive back Elijah Dotson last night after his visit to East Lansing to get his thoughts on the visit.

"It was great they really showed they’re interested," Dotson said. "The defense played great."

I asked Dotson if that visit meant that he'd take an official visit to MSU and he said yes. No date has been set yet but the Spartans are squarely in the mix for the Pitt commit. The previous staff had not been recruiting him much so the new attention from this staff has been a welcome development for him.

Dotson also continues to get new offers and was offered by Utah last night.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Spartans selected: G-League Draft

Two of the biggest names that were donning the ‘green and white’ at the Breslin Center over the past few college basketball seasons, have been selected early in the NBA’s G-League Draft

The names? Tyson Walker and Malik Hall.

Both of whom had seen their names officially announced in the 1st round… and it gets better— the pair are both able to claim themselves as ‘top 10’ picks!

Tyson Walker was chosen at pick #7 by the Texas Legends (Dallas Mavericks affiliate)

Malik Hall was chosen at pick #8 by the Greensboro Swarm (Charlotte Hornets affiliate)

The G-League Draft’s format itself, is a two-round draft; akin to the setup that the actual NBA Draft incorporates

NEW: Ross Dellenger on House Settlement Expections: Historic House-NCAA settlement leaving hundreds of Olympic sport athletes in peril

Main section:

How it is impacting current and future athletes

More than a dozen parents of current college athletes or recruits spoke to Yahoo Sports for this story. They were granted anonymity for fear of negative impacts to their children.

Their stories range widely across a variety of sports. A beach volleyball recruit, committed to a Big 12 program for months, was recently told the spot no longer exists. A sophomore cross country runner for an SEC team was notified by email that she was cut from the team two days after the semester began. Yahoo Sports obtained a copy of the email.

At one SEC school, eight track and field runners were cut or pushed out over the summer. One power conference program released all of their 2025 men’s swimming commitments. And in football, it is estimated that more than 1,500 walk-on players — roughly 20-30 per team — will see their spots cut.

In all, the 68 power conference schools are expected to eliminate at least 3,000 roster positions as administrators work to adhere to new roster limitations, reallocate resources from lower-tier to revenue-generating sports, and balance men and women opportunities to comply with the federal Title IX law.

The settlement concepts — the new roster structure and direct athlete revenue-sharing — is expected to take effect next July. While the settlement has yet to be formally approved, schools are “making roster adjustments now,” said Samantha Barany, executive director for the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America. “Anybody who has been recruited is being re-evaluated.”

The settlement is a groundbreaking and landmark agreement between the defendants (NCAA and power conferences) and the plaintiffs (those suing mostly over athlete-compensation restrictions). The deal features three main parts: (1) nearly $2.8 billion in backpay to former athletes distributed over a 10-year period; (2) a revenue-sharing concept permitting schools to share as much as $23 million annually with their athletes; and (3) the overhauled roster structure.

In an interview Thursday with Yahoo Sports, Steve Berman, one of the lead plaintiff attorneys who struck the settlement with the NCAA, acknowledged the elimination of roster spots. However, Berman told Yahoo Sports, “overall the settlement is a good thing, but some people are being affected who were promised a roster spot and now it is not there.”

Plaintiff attorneys are “working” with the NCAA and power leagues for solutions, Berman said, including a transitional period in which those currently on a roster are grandfathered into the system.

An NCAA official declined comment on this when reached.

Power conference leaders were not immediately available for comment. Commissioners of the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 were at the center of settlement negotiations and are expected to further assume more authority over the governance and enforcement in a post-settlement world.

OTHER SCHOOLS: Michigan Players Out?

I saw something about Tuttle and Will Johnson both sitting out of practice this week. I also saw some stuff out there about Johnson opting out for the rest of the year. Does anybody have anything more solid on this? I don’t see how we don’t rack it up on their secondary if Johnson doesn’t play. I kind of hope Tuttle plays, because I think some crazy game plan with Orji running all over the place gives them the best chance of winning.

FOOTBALL The NBC/Peacock broadcast of MSU trouncing Iowa

I was away for the game on Saturday and just last night watched the You Tube TV archive of the broadcast. I was impressed with NBC's coverage; I liked the camera angles and the picture was as clear as I can remember seeing on a football broadcast. In addition, I was pleased with the positivity exuded by the announcers throughout the game.

I'm just wondering if others have seen significant improvements in game broadcast comparing the various providers...Fox, BTN, NBC etc.

FOOTBALL MSU LB Cal Haladay: 'We don't need to be heroes' against rival Michigan

While this is the biggest regular season game of the year for Michigan State, the coaches are reminding the team that they just have to play within their means. Each player doesn’t need to do anything special for them to win the game.

“Coach talked about (how) we don't need to be heroes,” Haladay said. “We just need to go out and do our job and stay disciplined. That’s kind of what the big focus of this week’s been.”

FOOTBALL Q&A with Maize & Blue Review: What has gone wrong for Michigan in 2024?

The heated in-state rivalry matchup between Michigan State and Michigan takes place on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time (Big Ten Network). The Paul Bunyan Trophy is on the line.

Michigan State comes into the game with a 4-3 overall record and 2-2 mark in Big Ten play. Michigan enters Saturday with an identical record, but the two teams have been going in different directions. MSU is coming off of a big win over Iowa, while U-M has dropped two-straight conference games.

The Wolverines have won the past two contests in the series, but the Spartans have a chance to end that streak this weekend.

Spartans Illustrated spoke with Brock Heilig, beat writer for Maize & Blue Review — the home for all things Michigan on Rivals — to gain more insights about the 2024 Wolverines.

What has gone wrong for Michigan this year? While the offensive struggles have been obvious, has the defense also taken a step back? How should U-M head coach Sherrone Moore be graded thus far? Brock answers these questions and more here:

OFF TOPIC: CBS viewership down sharply in first full-year as Big Ten partner, but network is all in on the league

"It goes almost without saying that CBS has seen its viewership decline this season — the network’s 3:30 PM ET Big Ten windows have averaged 3.65 million viewers, down 28% from a mixture of Big Ten and SEC games in the same window at the same point last season (5.10M) and 26% lower than ABC’s competing 3:30 PM ET SEC slot (4.94M). (CBS is not disclosing Nielsen figures as the parties are at an impasse, but its viewership is still widely reported by industry publications.)"
