NEW: Rivals for a Cause: MSU and Michigan fans raise funds together for C.S. Mott Children's Hospital

The Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines are heated in-state rivals and will play the 2024 edition of their rivalry game for the Paul Bunyan Trophy game on Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on the Big Ten Network.

Some things are more important than sports, though, and while the two fan bases often don't get along, certain causes are worth coming together for to help those in need. This is why the Spartans Illustrated team has decided to partner with Blue By Ninety — a website and podcast providing coverage of the Michigan Wolverines — for Rivals for a Cause. We have chosen to do this to help raise money for pediatric cancer research through the Block Out Cancer fund at the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.

David Harns, publisher of Spartans Illustrated, and his team are working closely with Justin Roh and the Blue By Ninety team to promote the cause through articles, podcasts (including Spartans Illustrated's "Red Cedar Radar" podcast and Jason Strayhorn's "This is Sparta" MSU podcast), and an in-person event hosted by both publications leading up to the Michigan State versus Michigan matchup.

Former players and special guests representing both teams are expected to participate as well (more information on that to come later). Some of the content will also include personal anecdotes, including Michigan quarterback Davis Warren's battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

An in-person event will be hosted at the Pretzel Bell in Ann Arbor on Friday, Oct. 25. It will include a happy hour, live Blue By Ninety podcast with guests from Spartans Illustrated, Michigan/Michigan State trivia, and a live DJ. The timeline of events can be found below in the information section.

How can you help? Donate directly to the cause here. There is also still a friendly competition aspect to this between Michigan State and Michigan fans, as you can choose which school you are supporting when making the donation. Additionally, $1 from every purchase of North Peak Brewing Company's Hail IPA and Sparta IPA at the Pretzel Bell in Ann Arbor and Jolly Pumpkin in East Lansing will be donated to the fund throughout the week of Sunday, Oct. 20 through Saturday, Oct. 26.

OTHER MSU SPORTS Women's Soccer poised for postseason run

The highest ranked team on campus is the women's soccer team. They are currently in the top 10 nationally with two matches remaining in the regular season.

The Spartans are now 10-1-5 (5-1-3 B1G) on the season. MSU has secured a double-digit win season for the fourth straight year and have clinched a spot in the Big Ten Tournament.

Current Big Ten standings:

The Spartans host Northwestern Sunday and travel to Purdue next week to finish up the regular season.

With 18 Big Ten teams and only 11 regular season games, the tournament definitely decides things.

This year’s Big Ten tournament features a 10-team format with the first round and quarterfinals scheduled for Oct. 31 thru Nov. 3 at the University of Minnesota. The semifinals & championship match will be held at the home of Major League Soccer’s St. Louis CITY SC, on November 7 and 10.

MSU's next goal will be to clinch a first round bye by finishing in the top six.

Duffy will never receiver proper credit as long as media prefers Bryant fairytales

The media continues to sell Bear Bryant myths. Duffy and other pioneers will never receive their proper place in history
as long as the media remains entranced with Bryant folklore.

Bear Bryant's Civil Rights wake-up call was 55 years ago this week - one year before 1970 USC-Alabama fairytale - Tom Shanahan Report

This Tennessee rout of Alabama -- one year before the 1970 USC-Alabama game -- is yet another example.

Interestingly, I don't get push back I used to receive from Alabama and USC people. I think a lot of people now know the 1970 USC-Alabama game is a myth, but they won't admit it.

I've had editors tell me I've got the story right, but they won't use my freelance pieces. Some our national names.

One name I'll share here is Bryant Gumble. When RAYE of LIGHT came out, I hoped he would do story. He knew Jimmy Raye from his days with the Jets. Gumble emailed
me back, "My younger audience wouldn't understand the story.

FOOTBALL The key for Michigan State's defense versus Iowa: Stopping the run

Michigan State defensive line coach Legi Suiaunoa on Iowa's offense:

“They’re a physical outfit. They pride themselves on running the football. They pride themselves on moving the front, moving the line of scrimmage and feeding the (running) back. That’s who they’ve been."

FOOTBALL Spartans prepare for homecoming clash vs. Iowa: 'We're ready to roll'

Brian Wozniak and Brennan Parachek spoke about the Spartans' matchup vs. Iowa on Saturday.

"We’ve just got to show up and be physical and strong, too. That’s our game. We’re the Michigan State Spartans. We’ve got to show up and do that."

FOOTBALL Saturday's game represents 'whole new season' for Aidan Chiles, MSU offense

The way the schedule works out, it feels like a new season for Michigan State football and quarterback Aidan Chiles.

In his first season as a college starting quarterback, Chiles has completed 56% of his passes for 1,212 yards and five touchdowns through six games. He also has made his fair share of mistakes — Chiles has thrown eight interceptions in six games.

“I look at it as a whole new season,” Chiles said. “I came in, I expected myself to do more and I didn’t. That’s behind me. Come in, new season, new week, basically just here to get better.”

MEN'S BASKETBALL Game Recap: Michigan State at Northern Michigan

A bit of a mixed bag, with some good and some bad, but it is tough to judge any team in mid-October.

Read here:

OTHER SCHOOLS: Leavitt out for an extended period

Playing mediocre competition, he has busted up ribs and won’t be playing for a while.

His stats are better than Chiles, but he was always going to be 5’11” snd 190 pounds. Chiles will be 230 in a year and is all of 6’3”. Will he learn to take care of the ball? Time will tell, but one thing is for certain. A shrimp running around against the hard hitting defenses in the big ten is a recipe for injury. Best of luck kid.

FOOTBALL Dr. G&W's Week Eight Preview (Bad Betting Advice): OK Computer

The fall season has really crept up on us, hasn't it? It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the college football season. The advice from my computer was been better than just OK so far this year, and I hope to see that trend continue on the betting front.

My computer is not optimistic about MSU's chances this week. I have a feeling that the well-rested Spartans might have a surprise in store for the Hawkeyes. Is it bad luck to go against my computer? We are about to find out.

While I wish that my advice was bullet proof, it should at least not leave you high and dry. Check out this week's Bad Betting Advice where I "talk in maths" and try to evade the karma police. This is what you get when I am still on the payroll.

I hope that it is obvious that I went with a Radiohead theme this week. After hitting some 70s rock in Week Three, I decided it was time to flex my Gen X muscles a bit. Here's a fun fact: I saw Radiohead open for R.E.M. at Breslin in (I think) the spring of 1995. It was awesome.

Anyway, please enjoy this week's dose of Bad Betting Advice.
