OTHER SCHOOLS: Iowa has Two Skill Position Players Jump into the Portal

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa running back Leshon Williams and receiver Kaleb Brown have left the team and plan to enter the transfer portal in December, coach Kirk Ferentz said Monday.

Both players had diminished roles this season and appeared in only three of five games.

Williams started eight games and ran for a team-leading 821 yards on 170 carries in 2023. He went over 100 yards in three games, with a career-high 174 against Wisconsin. He finished his Iowa career with 1,323 yards rushing in 32 games and has one season of eligibility remaining.

Brown was at Ohio State for his freshman season and joined the Hawkeyes last year, when he started four of his 11 games and had 22 catches for 215 yards and a touchdown. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Tom Izzo Reflects on MSU's Experience at NMU: 'We were U.P. strong'

Following the conclusion of the Michigan State men's basketball team's first exhibition game of the 2024-2025 season — a 70-53 victory over Northern Michigan University in Marquette on Sunday in what was coined the "Superior Dome Showdown" — MSU head coach Tom Izzo reflected on what it meant to him to return to his alma mater and his old stomping grounds in the Upper Peninsula. The Michigan State players also discussed the experience.

FOOTBALL Jonathan Smith's focus shifts to Iowa after the bye

MSU's bye week was well-timed. Now, another tough test against Iowa awaits in a game that could really shift the odds for a bowl game in year one under Jonathan Smith.

FOOTBALL Dr. G&W's Week Seven Recap (Against All Odds): Spoiler Alert

With MSU having the week off, I was able to dig a little deeper this week into the various Power Four races, including identifying a few potential spoilers in each league.

As for the Spartans, not a lot has changed over the past week. The next three games will be tough, but odds are good that Michigan State can steal at least one upset win. That would make the final three games of the season much more manageable.

Finally, I hope that someone made good use of last week's (bad) betting advice. My computer had one of its best weeks ever.

As always, enjoy.

Duffy, football, women's golf and MSU sports in North Carolina

Duffy loved golf, so I decided to have some fun with this story.

I've played Forest Akers, but I didn't know as an old alum that MSU now has state of the art indoor facilities.

The players said the Forest Akers, the indoor facilities and coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll were all drawing cards on the recruiting trail.

Football and women's golf in North Carolina with Duffy approvingly watching from above - Tom Shanahan Report

Also, watch the NIL video Brooke and Katie did for me. Katie is playing for the piano and Brooke is reading from a children's book.

This would be a great teaching tool for Lansing-area elementary schools.

Unfortunately, MSU has done such a poor job celebrating Duffy, very football players know the true history of MSU leading college football integration.

RECRUITING 2026 OLB Nick Abrams II discusses Michigan State offer

Michigan State is the latest to offer 2026 outside linebacker Nick Abrams II. He is building a relationship with co-special teams coordinator/rush ends coach Chad Wilt.

"It felt great," Abrams told Rivals when asked about the Michigan State offer. "I had actually just landed from a flight back to Maryland when Coach Wilt called. So I was walking through BWI airport talking to him, and when he told me about the offer, I was saying, 'yes, yes, yes' in the middle of the airport."

This is another cross-post from my article on the national Rivals site, but the majority of his quotes discuss Michigan State, along with his interest in Georgia Tech and Penn State, and his upcoming visits:

RECRUITING 2025 four-star SG/SF Jordan Scott commits to Michigan State

The Michigan State men’s basketball program has its first commit of the 2025 class. Jordan Scott, a four-star shooting guard/small forward, gave his verbal pledge to head coach Tom Izzo and the MSU coaching staff, which he announced publicly on Thursday.

Scott was offered by the Spartans in June of 2023 after an unofficial visit to East Lansing and has been a priority target since that time. At 6-foot-7, 185-pound and a lengthy wingspan, Scott has the physical dimensions to be an impactful two-way player on the wing for the Spartans.

He took his official visit with Michigan State this past weekend, Oct. 4 through Oct. 6, which obviously went very well.

Rivals has Aristode ranked 19th overall in the Nation for the 2025 Class and the eighth best small forward. MSU has been aggressively recruiting wings with Frankie Fidler and Jaden Adkins in the last season of their eligibility. At least four of the current top-10 wings have been targeted by the basketball staff, including Jalen Haralson, Trey McKinney, and Davion Hannah, along with Aristode.

HOCKEY Spartan Hockey wins 600th game at Munn in its 50th year by Beating BC 4-3

No. 4 Michigan State rallied from 2-1 and 3-2 deficits to post a 4-3 victory over No. 2 Boston College on Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena. The Spartans pushed their record to 3-1 on the season and split the weekend series with the Eagles.

The victory was MSU's 600th at Munn Ice Arena. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024-25, Munn has hosted 955 Spartan games, and MSU holds a 600-282-73 record in its home facility all-time. Members of the 1974-75 Spartan hockey team – the first team to play at Munn - were on hand for the weekend festivities to kick off the anniversary year.

Stay tuned as Jerbear will likely have more Hockey coverage.

OFF TOPIC: Former Spartan Baseball and Football great Steve Garvey is on the big stage again, running for political office

Garvey was in a spirited debate with Adam Schiff yesterday.

Garvey credited his choosing MSU to Spartan head football coach Duffy Daugherty's encouraging him to be a multi-sport athlete.

At MSU, Garvey recorded 30 tackles and earned a letter as a defensive back in 1967. His first at-bat in a Spartan uniform resulted in a grand-slam home run, with the ball landing in the Red Cedar River.

Garvey was named Michigan State Baseball Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 2009, inducted into the Michigan State University Hall of Fame in 2010, and retired his baseball jersey (number 10) from Michigan State University in 2014.

Garvey played first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres from 1969 to 1987 and was a ten-time All-Star.
