FOOTBALL Dr. G&W's Week Three Preview (Bad Betting Advice): The View

Wow, what a difference a week makes, right? Football is fun again in East Lansing, but I always have a little fun with Bad Betting Advice. The national action is a bit light this week (for the Spartans included) but there are some fun story lines.

From a data point of view, the biggest story is that I am now incorporating data from the FCS-FBS games in the first two weeks. This is always slightly tricky. I fear that it sckews the results, but I think that data actual shows that the results of FCS-FBS games do provide some predictive value. That said, my computer is definitely feeling a bit more frisky.

Check out my picks and my thoughts on the week's action here:

Enjoy

RECRUITING MSU commits Justin Bell & DiMari Malone on Dakota's 34-6 win vs. Anchor Bay

Dakota High School (Macomb, Michigan) is now 3-0 on the 2024 campaign, following a 34-6 victory over Anchor Bay High School.

The Tars, coached by former Dakota head coach Mike Giannone, entered the game with a 2-0 record. However, the Cougars, led by head coach Greg Baur and Michigan State 2025 commits Justin Bell and DiMari Malone, remained undefeated after Friday's showdown.

Bell, a three-star offensive tackle, fulfilled his lifelong dream by committing to MSU in June. Malone, a three-star linebacker, committed during the previous month, pledging to the Spartans in May.

Spartans Illustarted was at Dakota on Friday night to watch the Cougars in action. Following the game, Bell, Malone, Baur and 2027 athlete Elijah Goins provided their thoughts from the victory over Anchor Bay and discussed what's next for them.

"When your best players are some of your hardest workers, you're going to have a good season," Baur said. "(Bell and Malone) don't take a play off in practice. They don't take a play off in the game. They're striving to get better, even though they already have their commitment, they're striving to get better, which tells you everything you need to know about them."

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer returns home for Alumni Night to take on Washington on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. MSU looks to snap a three-game winless streak.

The Spartans stand 1-3-2 so far this season after losing to Oakland 3-0 on the road on Monday. Michigan State is looking for its first win of September.

ON THE STAT SHEET
Junior midfielder Jonathan Stout leads the team in scoring with one goal and one assist for three points. Senior midfielder Sean Kerrigan, sophomore forward Richie Ludwig and freshman forward Mohamed Saad have also found the back of the net this season.

BIG TEN OPENER
MSU opens Big Ten action new Big Ten member Washington on Friday, Sept. 13. The Spartans are 6-1-3 in their last 10 Big Ten openers. Last season, the Spartans tied Rutgers on the road 1-1 in the league opener. In 2022, MSU tied No. 16 Indiana to open league play. In 2021, MSU tied Wisconsin 1-1 in Madison.

Prior to the last three seasons, Michigan State had begun B1G action against RU for five-straight seasons, going 4-1-0 during that span.

LOOKING AT THE HUSKIES
With a big win over No. 11 Seattle on Sept. 9, Washington improved to 3-1-2 this season. UW is 2-0-1 at home and 1-1-1 away from home. The teams have two common opponents in Oregon State and Air Force. The Spartans fell to OSU and tied Air Force, while Washington defeated both teams.

Charlie Kosakoff leads the team in scoring with six points off of two goals and two assists. Joe Dale is second with five points off of one goal and three assists. Chris Meyers leads the team with four assists. Jadon Bowton has started all six games in goal, allowing seven goals for a 1.17 GAA.

SERIES HISTORY
Michigan State is looking for its first win against Washington as the Huskies lead the series 2-0-1. The last time the teams met was in Seattle in 2022 when the Huskies came out on top 4-1. In 2019 in East Lansing, UW edged MSU, 1-0. In the 2014 NCAA Tournament in East Lansing, the teams tied 2-2 with MSU advancing on penalty kicks, 4-3.

GETTING IN THE LINEUP
Through six games this season, MSU has used five different starting lineups. In the first six games, five Spartans have started all six games in Zac Kelly, Shion Soga, Cristiano Bruletti, Jeremy Sharp, and Josh Adam.

BIG TIME B1G
Six teams in the Big Ten are ranked in either the United Soccer Coaches Poll or the Top Drawer Soccer Poll. In the USC poll, Wisconsin is ranked No. 8, while Northwstern is No. 14 and Michigan is No. 22. In the Top Drawer Poll, Wisconsin is No. 7, while UCLA (No. 12), Indiana (No. 20) and Ohio State (No. 25) are all ranked.

RULE CHANGES THIS SEASON
This season the clock will stop on substitutions with 15 minutes left if the game is tied or the winning team makes a sub.

Substitutions can be made during any stoppage of time. Another change is to allow teams six moments to make substitutions in a game. Current substitution exceptions for goalkeepers, injury caused by an opposing player who was cautioned or ejected, bleeding injury, blood on the uniform, concussion evaluation and a permanent medical condition will not count as a moment as long as no other substitutions are made at the same time by that team. If a coach has used all of their moments and there is an injury not covered by the current exceptions listed previously, the team will play short. For postseason overtime games, any unused moments will carry over and one additional moment for all of overtime will be awarded.

OTHER MSU SPORTS Women's Soccer: No. 5 Michigan State Opens Big Ten Play with 5-0 Win at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Fifth-ranked Michigan State women's soccer (5-0-2) opens Big Ten play on the road this week, taking on Maryland (3-2-3) in College Park on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.

Thursday's match will stream on B1G+.

FIRST TOUCH
MSU (5-0-2) concluded non-conference play undefeated for the second time in the Jeff Hosler era (2021) and fifth time in program history (2009, 2013, 2014, 2021) with wins over Queens University of Charlotte and Loyola Chicago last week. Graduate midfielder Emily Mathews recorded a hat trick in MSU's 6-0 win over the Royals and graduate midfielder Justina Gaynor scored the game-winner against Loyola Chicago in a 1-0 victory for the Spartans, who posted their fourth shutout of the season.

MSU is ranked fifth in the United Soccer Coaches Poll for the second-straight week after earning a program-high ranking at No. 4 on Aug. 27. The Spartans played three top-15 opponents in non-conference action and have the second-toughest schedule in the country according to the NCAA database report.

The Spartans are undefeated in Big Ten openers since 2019. MSU will also look to continue its unbeaten streak against conference opponents on the road this week after going 9-0-1 the last two seasons, having not lost a B1G road match since Oct. 17, 2021 at Rutgers.

After six-consecutive home matches, Thursday's match will be the first road match for MSU since its season opener at Notre Dame on Aug. 15.

SCOUTING MARYLAND
Maryland is led by head coach Meghan Ryan Nemzer, who is 10-20-13 in three seasons with the Terrapins. The Terrapins are 3-2-3 this season after ending non-conference play with a 4-0 home win over VCU on Sept. 8. Sophomore defender Kennedy Bell scored a pair of goals and notched in assist in the win, bringing her 2024 point total to a team-leading eight. Bell also leads the Terrapins in goals with three, while freshman midfielder Emily Lenhard leads in assists with three. FOOTBALL Article: Run defense is a big reason MSU stands at 2-0

The first two levels of Michigan State's defense have been great so far, despite plenty of question marks going into this season. The longest run by a running back against MSU so far was for 10 yards. See what Jordan Hall, Wayne Matthews III and Charles Brantley had to say about the run defense's hot start.
