MEN'S BASKETBALL Scouting the Spanish trip's arenas

I had the convenient coincidence (foresight even?) to have already scheduled a visit to Spain last month after Michigan State Men's Basketball announced its plans to visit the country for several games. Given the opportunity, I thought I might carve a little time out during the visit to see if I could scout the venues themselves the Spartans are likely to play in and grab some pictures for the board.

FOOTBALL Joe Rossi

I continue to be extremely impressed with Joe Rossi. He is energetic, sharp, and to the point. In my opinion, besides getting Chiles to come over from Oregon State, getting Rossi on the staff has been biggest accomplishment Smith has since taking over as HC.

We obviously would love to have him on staff as our DC for the rest of his coaching career, but I think it will be extremely difficult to fend off other programs from wanting Rossi to be their program leader in the next 2-3 years. Extremely impressive guy.

MEN'S BASKETBALL MSU vs. Madrid All Stars Box Score

My takes from today:

1. Obviously Booker was stellar. Super efficient both inside and out. But what I liked best was his rebounding aggressiveness. 17 OReb as a team is awesome.

2. Fidler is our Steady Eddy. He is super smooth in the midrange and I like that he draws fouls and cashed in the FTs.

3. Cooper had a quietly really good second half, nearly posted a double double by the end. He is clearly ahead of Z in the pecking order, who had a rough day.

4. Really nice to see Kohler get some extended play and make the most of his minutes. 13-12 double double screams improved effort.

5. Fears when he is dialed in can and should be this team's closer. Big upgrade at PG methinks.

6. Teng and Jase both had some really nice moments, you can tell they play with a lot of confidence. It'll be hard to keep both of them off the floor, however they will need to go through the usual freshman growing pains.

7. I hope Akins and Holloman either had too many sangrias or were just jetlagged. Combined 2/20 from our veteran SGs is a big time yikes.

Set aside 10 minutes and give this behind the scenes exclusive story a read. I granted anonymity to sources inside and around the football program to discuss Jonathan Smith's approach at MSU.

FOOTBALL Here's how you can support the family of MSU football player Armorion Smith

Michigan State defensive back Armorion Smith is from River Rouge, Michigan, a city just south of Detroit. Raised by a single mother, Gala Gilliam, Smith is the oldest of six children.

Smith started his college career with Cincinnati. He spent two years with the Bearcats. However, tragedy struck in October of 2022 when Gala was diagnosed with breast cancer. During the midst of Gala's fight with breast cancer, Smith transferred to Michigan State in the summer of 2023.

Despite the family's prayers and Gala's courageous fight, the cancer metastasized and she received a devastating prognosis just before the upcoming 2024 fall football season: she was given three to six months to live.

Here are ways Spartan fans can help support Smith's family, via @luccamazzie:

OFF TOPIC: Former Detroit Lions player arrested on Delta flight from Boston to Dublin

Gosder Cherilus, a first-round pick by the Detroit Lions and Lion from 2008-2012, was arrested for allegedly urinating on another passenger and causing a Delta 767-300ER flight headed to Dublin to turn around about an hour into its flight out of Boston.

FOOTBALL Dr. G&W's Preseason Football Analysis, Part Five: The Group of Five

My preseason college football preview series marches on with a preview of the races in the Group of Five conference. I also answer the question: "How accurate are these odds likely to be?"

Spoiler alert: they are very accurate.

What does that actually mean?

It means that when I calculate that a team has a 10% chance to make their conference title game, within the group of teams with similar odds, about one in 10 of them will actually make their conference title game. It sounds simple, but there are an awful lot of odds thrown out there in the preseason that are simply wrong. My are not.

Anyway, check it out and enjoy!

OFF TOPIC: Dr. G&W Completely Random Movie Review: Alien Romulus

It was maybe 60-70% of a good movie. I thought that it did some good things... but on balance, it was basically a hot mess. I am seeing a lot of strong reviews saying that it was the best Alien film since Aliens. No. Not even close.

I thought the premise and start was strong. But about 2/3s of the way through it just descended into WAY too much fan service until by the end it was just a jammed together mishmash of all of the other movies put together. Therein lies the problem: not all of the previous movies were good. Some, in fact, were a mess.

That said, I like Alien, I love Aliens, Alien 3 is bad, Alien Resurrection is also bad (possibly worse), Promethius and Covenant I think are both underrated and quite good. I know a lot of people did not like Promethius and Covenant for reasons that I never understood. Yes, it took the franchise in a bit of a different direction. But I thought that it was a direction that was pretty interesting. So I suppose that for the people that like Resurrection and did not like Promethius or Covenant, maybe this film is for you.

Then again, they did borrow some parts of both Promethius and even Covenant. The problem is, it didn't work.

I am annoyed. The only saving grace is that the theatre had M-43 on tap.

OTHER MSU SPORTS OLYMPIC MEDAL COUNT: MSU was the ONLY Big Ten school of 18 Schools that Did NOT get an Olympic medal.

OLYMPIC MEDALS: BREAKDOWN BY UNIVERSITY

The Big Ten racked up 98 medals in Paris. MSU was the only school without a medal, according to the Big Ten.

  1. Illinois: 2 (Two silver)
  2. Indiana: 4 (Two gold, two silver)
  3. Iowa: 4 (Two silver, two bronze)
  4. Maryland: 2 (Two gold)
  5. Michigan: 9 (One gold, three silver, five bronze)
  6. Minnesota: 1 (One silver)
  7. Nebraska: 3 (Three silver)
  8. Northwestern: 1 (One bronze)
  9. Ohio State: 6 (One gold, three silver, two bronze)
  10. Oregon: 4 (Three gold, one silver)
  11. Penn State: 15 (Three gold, three silver, nine bronze)
  12. Purdue: 1 (One silver)
  13. Rutgers: 2 (Two gold)
  14. UCLA: 12 (Three gold, four silver, five bronze)
  15. USC: 13 (Five gold, two silver, six bronze)
  16. Washington: 14 (Two gold, two silver, ten bronze)
  17. Wisconsin: 3 (One gold, two silver)

NOTE: UCLA/USC: 2 (Two gold for Rai Benjamin; his last school was USC, and his previous school was UCLA, this would bump
USC to tie Penn State).

Ironically, two schools that few conferences wanted in football, Stanford and the Cal Bears, had the most medals of any school.

1. Stanford: 39 Medals ( Twelve Gold, fourteen silver, thirteen bronze)

2. Cal Bears: 23 Medals ( Five gold, ten silver, eight bronze).

FOOTBALL An important read in today's LSJ

I've been reading about this topic for months and trying to figure out the best way to report it. Luckily for me, Graham Couch was as well. He presents it succinctly. Here's the article (it doesn't appear to be behind a paywall at this time):
