FOOTBALL Dr. G&W's Preseason Football Analysis, Part Four: The SEC, Big 12, and ACC

In the Parts Two and Three of my season preview, I went through MSU and the Big Ten. Since many of us are general college football fans, I always like to take a look beyond the Midwest and try to predict how the other conference might play out.

In that vein, I apply the same logic that I did to the Big Ten to the other three remaining "Power Four" conferences in today's analysis. In general, my analysis looks for schedule advantages that might tip the balance towards or away from certain teams. I went ahead and made a pick for the two teams that will reach the Championship Game, who will win, and I even give one dark horse for each league.

Check it out, and as always, enjoy!

FOOTBALL Jim Michalczik and Tanner Miller express optimism for MSU's offensive line

Just a day away from another scrimmage and two weeks away from the opening game against Florida Atlantic on Aug. 30, Michigan State offensive line coach/run game coordinator Jim Michalczik and sixth-year senior center Tanner Miller each seemed upbeat on Thursday about where their group was headed in 2024.

“We’ve come a long way since April,” Michalczik said about the offensive line.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Takeaways from Michigan State basketball's opening game victory in Madrid

Michigan State men's basketball started its journey in Spain by playing in Madrid on Thursday. The Spartans faced off against the Madrid All-Stars, a professional team. MSU ended up getting the victory by a final score of 94-87 to start off their journey.

@luccamazzie provides his thoughts on game one in Spain here:

FOOTBALL Jack Velling and Brian Wozniak talk importance of tight ends for MSU

Jack Velling and Brian Wozniak spoke about the importance of the tight end room for the Spartans.

“Everyone can do everything.”

FOOTBALL Michigan State OL Luke Newman: Being a Spartan means 'everything'

A common theme I tend to see on the message board here is that everyone prefers players on the team that want to be Spartans and take pride in putting on the Green and White.

Well, meet Luke Newman.

I think he'll be well-liked and appreciated this season.

NEW COMMIT: 2025 WR Braylon Collier Commits to MSU: 'Something special is being built'

Michigan State's 2025 recruiting class now includes six commitments, as three-star Ohio wide receiver Braylon Collier pledged to the Spartans on Friday.

MSU brought nine prospects to campus for its first group of official visits during the weekend of May 31 through May 2, and Collier is the first recruit from that bunch to commit to the Spartans.

After building strong relationships with wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins ("Coach Hawk"), assistant wide receivers coach Cordale Grundy ("Coach G"), head coach Jonathan Smith and many other staff members, Collier was certain after the official visit that he wanted to become a Spartan.

Michigan State being close to home also played a factor in Collier's decision. Collier currently attends Perkins High School in Sandusky, Ohio.

"The family atmosphere that Michigan State has established so early on, especially with a new staff and a lot of new guys on the team, is something special," Collier told Spartans Illustrated about why he chose to commit to the Spartans. "Geographically, it’s only two-and-a-half hours from home, so that was kind of the cherry on top ... There are no egos (in the program), just hard working, humble people all around. Something special is being built in East Lansing and I’m excited to be a part of it. I knew MSU was home for me after my official visit."

FOOTBALL Dr. G&W's Preseason Football Analysis, Part Three: The Big Ten Race

On today's installment of my math-driven preseason preview, let's take a closer look at the Big Ten race. In "researching" this article, I looked a lot into the potential tiebreakers, even though the Big Ten (to my knowledge) has yet to actually tell us what they are. That does make it challenging to write an algorithm. That said, I think we can make a pretty good guess as to what they will be.

As usual, I make a clear prediction as to who will make it to Indy, and why. Check it out.

OTHER MSU SPORTS Spartan Men’s Soccer Stops Butler in Exhibition Action Monday Night

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer defeated Butler 3-2 in its first exhibition of the season at Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis on Monday evening.

"This exhibition had a lot of everything," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "Butler came out, it was there second exhibition, and they were sharp and pressed us. They scored a couple early goals, and we weren't quite ready for it. To the guys credit, they re-grouped at half time and scored three great goals in the second half."

The Bulldogs jumped out early scoring two goals in the first half.

Michigan State came roaring back in the second half with three goals. Senior forward Efosa Emovon made it a 2-1 game in the second half. Junior midfielder Jonathan Stout and sophomore forward Richie Ludwig both found the back of the net to put the Spartans on top.

"We really picked up out intensity in the second half," Rensing said. "I think the other positive is that 21 field players and three goalkeepers played. We showed a lot of depth and interchangeable parts. There was a lot to take from it, and we will definitely take a look at the film and get better from this game."

The Spartans' final test will come against UIC on Friday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. Admission is free for the exhibition.
