RECRUITING Catching up with Michigan State prospects at the National College Showcase

Ryan O'Bleness and I caught up with numerous Michigan State prospects/targets at the National College Showcase event at Wayne State on Thursday.

Here is a full rundown of recruiting intel and updates from Detroit:

OFF TOPIC: Former Spartan WR Andre Rison is the New Interim Head Coach at University Liggett High School

"University Liggett Athletic has announced the hiring of Andre Rison as the Knights' Interim Head Football Coach. Rison has been elevated into the role after serving as the Offensive Coordinator last season. Rison comes with NFL All-Pro pedigree! #GoKnight"

OFF TOPIC: Michigan versus MSU (a conversation with my eye doctor)

Today I had my annual eye exam. I have an optometrist in Ann Arbor that I have gone to for maybe 20 years. She is a good doctor, and she is hilarious, so I often wind up shooting the breeze with her for 15 minutes during each appointment about random topics. She is an MSU grad (class of maybe 1993) and I think that she was a chemistry major in undergrad, if I remember correctly.

At today's appointment she told me an interesting story about her son, who is 19 and who just finished his freshman year in college. Her husband is originally from Canada and has no affiliation with any US school other than living in Ann Arbor. Due to the proximity, he became a Michigan fan and essentially "brainwashed" (her words, not mine) her son into also being a Michigan fan (despite the fact that his mother, who is a doctor, went to MSU).

When it came time to look at colleges, her son had a variety of places on his initial list including Michigan, Toledo, Western, etc. When his mom asked him about Michigan State, his first response was "oh, Mom, there are tons of schools in the state that are better than MSU."

Now, let's stop to ponder the consequences of this statement. Frist of all, we all know that this is not true. By any reasonable measure, Michigan State is a top tier research university. There are only two top tier Universities in the state (although other schools such as Wayne State and Michigan Tech certainly have good programs in certain disciplines.) We all know that. But the fact that a very recent high school grad was brazen enough to make this statement to his MSU grad mom (who is a doctor) is shocking.

Obviously, there is only one place where this type of propaganda can come from: other Michigan fans. As I think all of us know, one of the core values of the University of Michigan is insulting the quality of education at MSU. We have all experienced it. Some MSU grads are even conned into believing it themselves. I could probably write a 1,000 page essay on this topic alone. Maybe I already have. Suffice it to say that this is not OK.

But the next part of the story might be even more interesting.

My doc's son was interested in engineering, but also interested in business. One day, he asked his mom if maybe they should check out MSU and his mom suggested that he look into packing science (which for those that do not know, MSU has the No. 1 program in the country). She picked a day during "Green and White" week in late June for the visit. It was 78 degrees with a clear blue sky in East Lansing. You can imagine what happened. Long story short, her son just finished his first year at MSU and he loves it there.

It sounds like he still might root for Michigan in football, but one year is all that it took for him to switch allegiance in basketball. ("Howard ran Michigan's program into the ground. But Izzo is a living legend.") I doubt the football allegiance will last.

Perhaps most interesting was my doctor's final comment. She said that her son now says that he doesn't like his old high school friends who are now attending Michigan as much anymore. He says that they have changed, and they are now really arrogant. Shocking, I know.

Nothing in this story is going to be a surprise to anyone who has been an MSU fan for very long, but it was interesting to hear to spelled out with real, on the ground information.

OFF TOPIC: BE PREPARED TO BE CONVERSATIONAL IN THE FILM IF YOU’RE GONNA WEAR THE T-SHIRT

There was a guy wearing a Big Lebowski t-shirt at the apizza ristorante last night. He was overweight, slovenly, oddly misshapen torso, elongated forehead splattered with cold sores, blotchy skin, and could pass for a Railfan with lots of anime you know what on his Acer laptop. He was with an older, also overweight woman, with cankles and dry white skin cascading upward her leg; her dry white skin was immediately noticeable, and there were three (3) scratches (likely from itching).

She was incessantly speaking to him, complaining about certain people (whom presumably were in their friend circle). We were NOT eavesdropping, because the tables were close in apizza ristorante and she was speaking loudly. I kept wondering whether he needed to be “rescued” because he almost seemed like he was a hostage in the conversation.

Finally, during a quick break, I asked him what his favorite Big Lebowski scene was. He just said “I love Walter” and so I assumed that he didn’t hear my question. Then I told him a few of my favorite lines, i.e. “8 year olds, dude…” and “Dude, tomorrow’s already the tenth.” Regarding the latter, I mentioned Marty’s play and the guy had no recollection of what I was even talking about. He also mentioned Farrelly Brothers and not Coen Brothers. Our waiter heard some of the conversations and mentioned Big Lebowski to him also, but he seemed equally perplexed by our waiter’s questions. I mentioned Logjammin’ and he nervously chuckled “I’m not an encyclopedia on the movie.”

We soon realized that he was a complete fraud. He admitted that he “liked the t-shirt” which said “Lebowski Bowling Team” and he didn’t even have a basic grasp on the fundament elements in the movie. When I mentioned how the TV in the beginning Ralph’s scene had George H.W. Bush and him saying “this will not stand” and then “aggression” and how it’s a central theme in the movie, he was completely blank. All in all, we realized that he was a fraud.

In my mind, I wanted him to take off the t-shirt. But then I’m just like one of him. A phony and a FRAUD and a POSEUR.

OTHER SCHOOLS: Minnesota-Wisconsin tabbed for this year's afternoon Black Friday game

Under the media contract, NBC gets a primetime game to air on the network and Peacock (MSU had to do it last year versus PSU) and CBS gets a daytime game starting this fall.

Nebraska-Iowa will once again be Black Friday to satisfy Nebraska's 90's era Big 8 tradition obsession, but someone decided that game is worthy of primetime and NBC is picking it up for that. This year the second matchup pegged for Black Friday will be Wisconsin-Minnesota who play the daytime Black Friday game.

FOOTBALL NCAA considering changes to allow on-field corporate sponsorships

"Within the NCAA’s government structure, officials are seriously considering legislative changes to permit schools to display corporate logos on their football fields. While more debate is expected next month within the NCAA playing rules oversight committee, administrators expect a resolution that opens the door for on-field sponsorships — and, perhaps eventually, corporate patches on player jerseys."

More on the changes being considered from Ross Dellenger:

He played his college ball at Nebraska.

RECRUITING 2026 four-star LB Keenan Harris feels 'good' following Michigan State offer

Class of 2026 four-star linebacker Keenan Harris stood out at the Rivals Camp in Indianapolis on May 19. In fact, the Missouri native took home linebacker MVP honors at the event, which was filled with talented players from the Midwest and beyond.

"It was great because I got show off my skills and go up against good competition," Harris told Spartans Illustrated about being named MVP at the camp.

A few days later, Michigan State offered Harris a scholarship on May 22, as the Saint Louis University High School star continues to see his recruitment ascend.

Harris took some time to chat with Spartans Illustrated about what the Michigan State offer mean to him and what is next in his recruitment.

RECRUITING Personal/Career Update (don't worry, I am not leaving)

Hey, all!

I just wanted to let you know that I will be taking on a larger role with Rivals in June, as I have accepted a part-time role with the national team as a recruiting analyst. I will be focusing on recruits in the Northeast and possibly helping in other areas as well. However, as mentioned, this is a part-time role, so the best part is that I still get to stay here part-time as well and continue to provide content and intel regarding Michigan State.

I wanted to let you all know before I announced it publicly. I don't think too much is going to change with my role here, other than I will now be splitting up my time a little bit differently and I may not be as immediately available to respond to your posts and messages, but the rest of the team is here as always to jump on news and help out. I will still do my best to get back everybody as quickly as I can. I have actually been working with the national team behind the scenes for a few of months now, managing the Rivals combine database, and while my role has changed slightly with Spartans Illustrated this year and I may be doing a little bit less, I don't think there's been a noticeable difference. It is certainly going to get busy for me, though, especially with official visit beginning this weekend. But, when this writing opportunity came up, I was the first person the national team called for the job. Their belief in me means a lot.

We are still figuring out an exact start date for the new role, but it will likely begin during the first or second week of June.

Thank you for your continued support and allowing me to grow over the last year-and-a-half! I am looking forward to the opportunity and happy I can remain active with Spartans Illustrated as well.

RECRUITING 2025 DB Deuce Edwards feels 'great energy' from Michigan State after offer

Michigan State cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin and secondary coach Blue Adams have been busy on the recruiting trail as they look to build the future of the Spartans' defensive backfield in their vision. One of the most recent offers from the tandem was to 2025 three-star cornerback Terrance Edwards.

Edwards, who goes by "Deuce," is a highly-coveted defensive back with more than 30 scholarship offers to his name thus far. While he plans to play cornerback at the college level, Rivals currently ranks him as the No. 35 safety and No. 11 prospect in the state of Virginia for the 2025 cycle.

The Trinity Episcopal School (Richmond, Virginia) star has a family connection to the Spartans, as his cousin, Felton Davis III, was a four-year letterwinner and accomplished wide receiver for Michigan State under head coach Mark Dantonio from 2015 through 2018.

Edwards spoke to Spartans Illustrated about the offer, advice he has received from Davis, his relationship with Martin and Adams and more.

"It means a lot to me," Edwards said about the Michigan State offer. "MSU has always been one of the schools I thought about. I've been watching them since my cousin Felton Davis played there."

OFF TOPIC: Bill Walton passes away

I know a lot of people found him annoying but I always enjoyed his “un-opinionated” commentary.
