Day One​

Elle Adrian Reaches the Podium on the First Day of the B1G Track Championships​

EUGENE, Ore. - On the first day of the Big Ten Track & Field Championships, Michigan State had Spartans reach the podium and advance to finals at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Elle Adrian picked up the first point for the Spartan women, finishing eighth in the women's hammer throw. With her second throw of the day, she set a new personal best with a throw of 60.97m to reach the final in eighth place. She was not able to improve on that with her final three throws. She finished fourth in the women's weight throw at the indoor Big Ten Championships. Valadian Pallett was 12th with a career-best throw of 58.59m.

In her first Big Ten Outdoor Championship, Rachel Forsyth reached the final of the women's 1500m, finishing third in the second heat to automatically qualify. She crossed the line in 4:20.83. Overall, she qualified in the 12th spot. Olivia Millen finished 19th with a time of 4:24.50.

Timothy Cherry finished 10th overall in the men's 1500m, but did not qualify for the final. His time of 3:46.35 was just shy of four qualifying spots once the two automatic qualifiers in the four heats were set.

In the Spartans first event of the championship, Joshua DeVries finished 10th in the men's hammer with a top throw of 64.80m, which he achieved on his second attempt. He fell just short of reaching the final. Xavier Griffiths set a new personal best with a throw of 60.13m.

After the first day of competition, Dylan Terryberry stands 11th in the decathlon with 3,643 points. His best event of the day was a fourth-place finish in the shot put. He captured 709 points with a throw of 13.68m. He also set a personal best in the high jump (1.84m), earning 661 points. He ended the night with a season best in the 400m. He crossed the line in 51.48 to finish 10th and capture 748 points.

At the midway point of the heptathlon, Avery Budz is currently 17th with 3.073 points. Her best event was the high jump, where she finished fifth with 806 points. Her best jump was 1.66m. She set a pair of personal bests in the 100m hurdles (14.80) and the 200m (25.51). Leila Barmore stands right behind her in 18th place with 2,986 points. She set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 9.73m for 512 points. Barmore also added a season best in the 200m finishing 13th in 25.47 for 844 points.

The Spartans ended the night with the 10,000m races. In the women's race, Kaitlyn Hynes finished 12th with a time of 34:07.19. In the men's race, Moses Osterink was the top Spartan finisher, crossing the line in 30:19.59 end 18th.

On Saturday, both the decathlon and the heptathlon will conclude, along with several prelim races on the track. The men's and women's steeplechases will end the second night of competition. Once again, the men will start at 6:52 p.m. (PT)/9:52 p.m. (ET). Saturday will see finals for men's javelin, men's shot put, women's long jump and women's discus.

Day Two​

Stewart-Barnett Wins Big Ten Steeplechase Title on Day Two of Track Championships​

EUGENE, Ore. -Kate Stewart-Barnett captured the women's 3000m steeplechase Big Ten title on the second day of the B1G Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Stewart-Barnett pulled away from the field after the last barrier to earn the win in 9:42.78. This was her second Big Ten steeplechase championship, also winning in 2023 with a time of 10:01.34. She is the first multi-year steeplechase winner for the Spartans since Leah O'Connor won four-straight from 2012-15.

"My race plan was just to go to the front and just run the pace that I felt confident and calm, and just ready to compete that last K and I'd say I executed that pretty well," Stewart-Barnett said. "There was a little more stress than I anticipated from Washington, but I was just ready to move in the last lap."

Andrew Nolan scored points for the Spartans in the 3000m steeplechase for the second-straight season. After finishing second last season, he was fourth this season in a tightly contested race. The top four finishers all came from the second heat. He was fourth with a time of 8:42.88.

Shae Harbaugh reached the final of the women's 800m for the second-straight season. Running in the third of five heats, Harbaugh ran a personal best 2:04.63 to advance on time. Overall, she had the fourth-fastest time. Last season, she finished sixth in the final for three points for the Spartans.

Dylan Terryberry continued a long history of success in the decathlon, finishing seventh with a personal best 7,140 points. The Spartans have had four Big Ten decathlon champions since 2018. He started the day in strong fashion with a personal best in the 110m hurdles. He finished ninth with a time of 15.25 for 820 points. In the discus throw, he had his best finish, ending third with a throw of 40.90m for 681 points. He ended the day and secured two points for the Spartans with a sixth-place finish in the 1500m (4.41.70) for 670 points.

The Michigan State men added two more points when Brady Schultz took seventh in the high jump. He cleared 2.06m to reach the podium. In his first outdoor championship, Dillon Morlock picked up a point for the Spartans in the shot put. He finished eighth with a throw of 18.56m.

In the final day of the heptathlon, Leila Barmore and Aver Budz both set personal bests. Barmore finished 16th with 5,017points. Budz was 19th with 4,788 points.

Barmore started the day with the long jump, finishing fifth with a best jump of 5.96m, which was good for 837 points. She had another strong showing in the javelin where she set a new personal best with a throw of 34.80m. Barmore earned 568 points in the event. Budz was 20th in both the long jump and the javelin throw. She had a season best throw in the javelin (22.11m) for 328 points.

Sunday will be full of finals, beginning with the 4x100m relays and ending with the 4x400m relays. In the field events, there will be finals in the women's javelin, men's and women's triple jump, women's pole vault, women's high jump, men's discus and women's shot put. Rachel Forsyth will also be back in action in the women's 1500m final, as well as Harbaugh in the women's 800m.

Day Three​

Spartans End B1G Track & Field Championships with Four Podium Finishes​

EUGENE, Ore. - On the final day of the B1G Track & Field Championships, Michigan State Track & Field earned four podium finishes at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon on Sunday.

"I thought we had some really great performances and breakthroughs. We still have people that are learning how to compete at this level and learning what it takes not only this week but year round," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Lisa Breznau said. "I am super proud of a number of people throughout the week. All of our scorers, I think, did a tremendous job of staying focused and just simply trying to be at their best and not worrying about the outcome. We will continue to build a group that knows how to compete."

Rachel Forsyth continued her strong freshman campaign finding the podium twice on Sunday. After finishing fifth in the 3000m at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, she earned another fifth-place finish in the 1500m with a time of 4:15.70. She was among the leaders of the pack for the whole race with Washington's Sophie O'Sullivan pulling away in the final few meters, winning in 4:11.66.

Less than two hours after the final of the 1500m, Forsyth was back at it again in the 5000m final. She stayed in the main pack throughout the race. Oregon's Silan Ayyildiz pulled away winning the race in a meet record time of 15:37.11. Forsyth ran a confident race, setting a new personal best (15:43.81) to finish fifth. Her previous personal best was 15:47.04 at the Virginia Challenge in April. With her two fifth-place finishes on the day, Forsyth earned eight points for the Spartans.

Riley Hough had a fantastic showing in the men's 5000m. Running with a group of Oregon and Wisconsin runners for the majority of the race, Hough held his own, crossing the line with a personal-best time of 13:34.19 to finish fourth. Oregon's Simeon Birnbaum set a new meet record to capture first place in 13:31.87

After running a personal best 2:04.63 to advance to the final on Saturday, Shae Harbaugh earned more points for the Spartans in the 800m final. She finished seventh in the final, crossing in 2:06.61 to earn two points.

In the women's triple jump, Leila Barmore finished 12th with a season best jump of 12.47m. In the women's shot put, Jessica Stieb was just shy of reaching the final, taking ninth (16.43m).

The Spartans ended the meet with the 4x400m relays with both teams earning season bests. The women's squad of Alexys Wilson, Gabrielle Jeffries, Shae Harbaugh, Elizabeth Anderson ran 3:40.41. The men's team of Henry Shaieb, Timothy Cherry, Drew Novak, Terrence Muex crossed in 3:18.95.

The MSU women finished 12th with 21 points, while men were 16th with 15 points. USC women won its first Big Ten outdoor team title with 121 points. The Oregon won also picked up its first Big Ten outdoor title with 110 points.

Michigan State will next head to Jacksonville, Florida on May 28-May 31 for the NCAA First Round.
