Some new research sheds new light MSU's star-crossed Tommy Love's impact

A guy from Tennessee sent me some new research on Tommy Love, Michigan State's star-crossed 1966 Parade High School All-American recruit from North Carolina.

Here are more reasons to understand Tommy Love's moment unfairly lost to history - Tom Shanahan Report

It sheds new light on the progress in the South, so I put together a story. I hope it sheds more light on Duffy Daugherty's significant role, Love's moment in time that are all lost
in the shadows of Bear Bryant hagiography.

Love playing at an integrated school helped him game mainstream media attention otherwise denied Black kids playing in the anonymity of Black schools.

The best books on college football integration are my two books, RAYE OF LIGHT and THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

From Kirkus, The Right Thing To Do: "Fascinating read" ... "unexpected subplots" ... "A work of sports history that fill gaps" ... "prose is breezy" - Tom Shanahan Report

OTHER MSU SPORTS Spartan Men’s Soccer Edged 1-0 by Rutgers In Heart-Breaking Fashion Sunday On Senior Day

MSU nipped by Rutgers, 1-0, in final regular-season match.

1730732566045.png

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State men's soccer was nipped by Rutgers, 1-0, on Spartan Senior Celebration Day, presented by HAP, on a Sunday afternoon at DeMartin Stadium.

Rutgers scored in the 83rd minute to take the lead, but Michigan State had several late chances including a penalty kick with 43 seconds left that went wide to deny the draw and spoil the Spartans' Senior Day festivities.

After the match, Michigan State men's soccer celebrated Zack Babiak, Efosa Emovon, Levin Gerhardt, Sean Kerrigan and Shion Soga in their final regular-season matches at DeMartin Stadium in the Green & White.

"Sometimes it's like 'hey do you want to do it after a loss or a win', for me it puts it into perspective that it's not about one game," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "It's not about one loss, it's about their commitment to MSU soccer for four, three, two, one year, or whatever time they have had here. All these guys have made a great commitment to Michigan State Soccer, and I'm very grateful and very proud. It's a good sign, the show of having the parents and what they represent, and what our kids are about. We've got great young men here on our soccer program, and I'm very proud of not just how they are as players, but as students and as people of the community, so that puts some things into perspective for sure."

With the loss, MSU finishes regular-season play 5-7-4, including 4-4-2 in Big Ten Conference action. Rutgers moves to 6-9-2 overall and 3-6-1 in B1G play.

The Spartans await the rest of the league results for their B1G Tournament seeding.

"Well, I think you saw it today, it comes down to one or two plays," Rensing said. "I thought we did a lot of good things, and we just lacked conviction in the final third. We got in those areas enough, but just didn't do enough to really warrant to goal, and that's disappointing. Obviously going down a goal, I thought the guys responded well in the last eight minutes, but you don't wait until the last eight minutes to respond. I wish I was seeing that from the kickoff from the guys."

The first half ended in a stalwart stalemate at 0-0, with both teams generating chances, but were turned away by the respective defenses. RU had a slim, 4-3, edge on shots in the first half, with redshirt-junior goalkeeper Zac Kelly making one save in the opening 45 minutes.

After halftime, both teams increased the offensive pressure, while both turned up the defensive intensity. MSU had its best scoring chance up to that point in the 80th minute when junior defender Jeremy Sharp had a shot roll just inches away from the post. Two minutes later, Rutgers broke the stalemate, taking advantage of a pass that spun in the wind, falling down to Francesco Di Ponzio, who tapped it past Kelly and into the net.

The Spartans didn't go quietly into the afternoon, generating several more scoring chances, but were turned away by the Scarlet Knight defense and RU keeper Ciarn Dalton. Junior forward Jonathan Stout had a late chance with a header, but it went just over the bar.

The Spartans' next action will be the 2024 Big Ten Tournament, with the quarterfinals starting on Thursday, Nov. 7 at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois, with full Tournament game information and pairings to be announced later.

OTHER MSU SPORTS Women's Soccer: No. 16 Spartans Fall to Rutgers in Overtime in B1G Quarterfinals

1730418144341.png

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - 16th-ranked and fourth-seeded Michigan State women's soccer opens postseason play on Saturday, Nov. 2 against fifth-seeded Rutgers in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET at the University of Minnesota's Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

All tournament quarterfinal matches will stream on B1G+.

FIRST TOUCH
MSU (12-1-5, 7-1-3 B1G) wrapped up the regular season with a 3-1 home win over Purdue last week, finishing in fourth place in the final league standings. It marked MSU's fourth-straight top-four Big Ten finish since head coach Jeff Hosler's arrival in 2021. Prior to Hosler's arrival, MSU had not finished in the top five since 2011.

Graduate forward Mackenzie Anthony notched a first-half goal against Purdue, while freshman midfielder Kaleigh McPherson and graduate forward Meg Hughes tallied second-half scores. Hughes' goal was her team-leading seventh of the season, which also brought her 2024 point total to a team-leading 19. McPherson's goal was the first of her career. She was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Tuesday this week.

SCOUTING RUTGERS
Rutgers is 10-3-4 this season and finished with a 6-2-3 record in the Big Ten to finish in a tie for fifth in the final league standings. The Scarlet Knights ended regular-season play with a 1-1 home draw with Maryland on Oct. 27. Senior defender Emily Mason scored the lone Rutgers goal in that contest.

Senior forward Riley Tiernan leads the Scarlet Knights in scoring with 17 points this season from a team-leading four goals and nine assists. Shaela Bradley, Allie Post and Ashley Baran also have scored four goals this season. In goal, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer holds a 0.826 save percentage and 0.71 goals-against average.

Saturday's meeting between the two schools will be the 13th all-time and second this season. Rutgers holds a 9-2-1 edge in the series, which dates back to 2004. MSU and Rutgers have never met in the Big Ten Tournament.

The Spartans and Scarlet Knights played to a 1-1 draw in East Lansing on Sept. 29 this season. After a defensive battle through the first 80 minutes, Anthony finally broke the ice with 10 minutes to go to give MSU a 1-0 lead. In the 86th minute, a handball by the Spartans in the box awarded Rutgers a penalty kick that was slotted home by freshman Gabriela Gil to seal the 1-1 result.

MSU IN THE B1G TOURNAMENT
MSU is playing in their fourth B1G tournament in as many years this weekend. Head coach Jeff Hosler has guided the Spartans to the conference tournament in every year of his tenure so far. Saturday will be MSU's 16th all-time B1G tournament appearance since the tournament's inception in 1994. Before Hosler's arrival in 2021, MSU had not qualified to the tournament since 2011.

The Spartans are 4-15-2 all-time in the tournament. MSU has advanced to the semifinals five times - twice on penalty kicks (2008, 2011) and three times with quarterfinal round wins (1994, 2005, 2022). MSU has only made the championship game once, which came in 2022, where MSU was defeated by Penn State, 3-2.

Last season, MSU dropped its quarterfinal match to eventual champion Iowa, 2-1, in East Lansing.

UP NEXT
The Big Ten semifinals and championship are scheduled for Nov. 7 and Nov. 10, respectively, at CITYPARK in St. Louis. The winner of Saturday's quarterfinal will play the winner of B1G champion and top-seeded USC and either No. 8 Wisconsin or No. 9 Ohio State in the semifinals.

The First Whistle
Michigan State returns one NCAA qualifier and five other wrestlers that started in 10 or more duals for the Spartans last season. Redshirt senior Tristan Lujan is MSU's returning NCAA qualifier and is joined by redshirt junior Andy Hampton, redshirt sophomore Braden Stauffenberg, redshirt senior DJ Shannon, redshirt sophomore Kael Wisler and redshirt sophomore Josh Terrill as a returning starter.

Returning to the lineup is redshirt sophomore Cesar Garza at 174 pounds, who started in 10 duals as a true freshman in 2022-23 before redshirting during the 2023-24 campaign. Redshirt sophomores Wisler and Terrill aim to earn their first NCAA Tournament qualifications this season after coming up just short a year ago. Terrill was 25-15 in his first season as a starter and Wisler finished 26-14 as a redshirt freshman.

Michigan State will be one of the younger teams in the B1G this season, with nine wrestlers in the opening weekend probables listed as a redshirt sophomore or younger.

MSU went 8-0 against non-conference opponents in 2023 and was won 22 straight non-con duals dating back to 2/21/20 at Central Michigan (L, 21-15).

First Look: American
American University has strong leadership headed by fourth-year head coach Jason Borrelli, the 2021 Dan Gable National Coach of the Year. AU won eight duals for the second straight season a year ago, matching the most dual wins in the past 13 years for the program.

Maximilian Leete placed fifth at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships at 133 pounds to earn an automatic big to the NCAA Tournament. Jack Maida, Jack Nies and Will Jarrell are also former EIWA placewinners. Maida took fifth at 133 in 2023 and Nies placed sixth at 157. Jarrell was the ninth-place finisher at 285 in 2024.

Maida qualified for the NCAA Tournament at 133 in 2023 to mark Borelli's first qualifier at American. Maida, who competed at 125 in 2024, will bump back up this season but to 141 pounds. At 125, Maida pulled an upset over Virginia Techís 2023 All-American Eddie Ventresca.

FOOTBALL MSU is a long way away from contending. Regardless, trust Jonathan Smith.

It's going to be easy for people to compare Jonathan Smith and Curt Cignetti because they are both first-year coaches. Doing so is unfair to Smith and there is no reason to believe he can't bring MSU back.

FOOTBALL Poor execution highlighted in Michigan State's 47-10 loss to Indiana

Saturday's matchup against No. 13 Indiana was the type of result that Spartan fans have grown accustomed to against highly-ranked teams in the past few years.

Despite an early 10-0, Indiana scored the next 47 points — resulting in an embarrassing 47-10 loss at home for MSU.

Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith shared his thoughts following the game, and ripped the band-aid off to start his postgame press conference.

“Well, obviously that was tough,” he said. “You’re gonna get exposed against a really good team when you don't execute well. And credit to those guys (on Indiana), sometimes we quickly just think about ourselves — those guys executed at a really high level.”

More from Smith's postgame press conference:

I’m unhappy!

No, not with the team and quality of play on the field (well, OK, a little bit, but satisfaction is a combination of expectations and outcomes. My expectations for this season were low, so the outcomes are leaving me only slightly in-satisfied). Nope, my unhappiness is due to two aspects of the game day experience.
1. Replays in the stadium: how is it friends can txt me what they saw on replay at home yet those of us in the stadium are left with watching paint peal off a Spartan helmet. Was that a late hit that knocked Chiles out of the game? How about the holding non-calls on IU. SOMEONE has got to take responsibility for replays!

2. Student entry….We never enter the stadium from the south, but today, a tailgate invitation to the vicinity of the International Center had us going in that way. At 3:15 PM the line for student entry was all the way south to Shaw lane, east to Red Cedar, then north far past the STEM education building. I asked a couple of students how long they had been in line, and they said over an hour! My observation is that the line was not moving. This has been a problem for at least a couple of years….someone in the athletic department must figure this out…no wonder students seem so fickle.

Problems that are on going, yet easily fixable are ridiculous……Our university can do better!

FOOTBALL Michigan State starts fast, but falls to Indiana, 47-10

The Spartans were clicking on all cylinders in the first quarter enroute to building a 10-0 lead. But the momentum shifted starting in the second quarter and the Indiana Hoosiers ran away with a 47-10 win.

MSU falls to 4-5 (2-4 in the Big Ten). Here is my recap here:

Since I was doing the recap, I watched that entire game without beer. I just want my sacrifice to be noted.

Big game today. I'm neither a Lions nor a Packers fan (I didn't grow up in Michigan), but I have to say that I'm kinda jumping on the Lions bandwagon. I think that there's some legitimacy in me rooting for the Lions because I own property in Michigan 😅 But I'm from NJ and NY and I'm a Bills fan (I actually like all the NY teams, I'm not a Mets fan that hates the Yanks, nor am I Giants fan that hates the Jets).

Who ya' got?
