QUICK STRIKES FOR THE WEEK AHEAD ...

• Michigan State heads to Bloomington on Friday to take on Indiana in the Big Ten and regular-season finale for both squads.

• MSU split its final weekend of home games last weekend. MSU got a goal and an assist from Maddie Lawlor and the OT winner from freshman Carmen Pucheta in the 2-1 win over Iowa on Friday, and then a 17-save performance by Lyra Gavino on Sunday in a setback to No. 1 Northwestern.

• Kayla Bashore is in her sixth season as the head coach at Indiana. The Hoosiers are 8-8 on the season with Big Ten overtime victories over Rutgers and Iowa, and an upset win over Michigan last weekend in Ann Arbor. Ines Garcia Prado leads the squad in goals (8) and points (17), with Yip van Wonderen ranking second in both categories (6-2-14). Freshman Sadie Canelli ownds a 1.38 GAA and .768 save percentage.

• Michigan State has played a program-record seven overtime games this season, which ties the 2000 and 2014 squads with the most requiring extra time. The Spartans are now to 3-4 in overtime games this season, with three going to a second OT period and one advancing to a penalty shootout. The 2000 squad was 2-5 in extra time, and the 2014 team was 4-3.

• The Spartans have doubled their win total from a year ago (4) and have scored 33 goals through 17 games in 2024. The 2023 offensively-challenged Spartans scored 17 goals in 16 games combined.

• Two of the Big Ten's weekly honorees will be minding the goalcages in Friday's contest - Defensive Player of the Week Lyra Gavino, and Freshman of the Week, IU's Sadie Canelli.
: : :&nbsp:Gavino made 10 saves in the Spartans' overtime win over Iowa last Friday, and then matched her career best of 17 saves against No. 1-ranked Northwestern on Sunday. Gavino has twice had 17 saves in a game this season, the highest total by a keeper in the B1G this season.
: : :&nbsp:Canelli made five saves (and five more in the penalty shootout) in a penalty shootout loss to No. 3 Ohio State on Friday, and then made three saves in IU's upset of No. 7 Michigan on Sunday.

• With six players boasting double-digit points, it is the second-most in the last 10 years for MSU - the 2022 team had seven with 10 points or more. MSU has seven returning players who have established new career highs in goals, assists AND points (all three categories). Six players have either four or five goals.

• Sophomore keeper Lyra Gavino has three straight double-digit save performances - a 10-save performance in the 2-1 OT win over Iowa between a pair of 17-save outings against No. 16 Penn State and No. 1 Northwestern. She previously had 10 saves in an OT win against Miami on Oct. 1. Her 17 stops is tied for 10th most in a game this season among all Division I players and the most by a Big Ten keeper this season.

Gavino owns a 2.00 GAA and .707 save percentage, both career bests. The sophomore ranks first among all Big Ten keepers in shots faced (252) and saves (97), and second overall in minutes played (997). Her 6.06 saves per game ranks 16th nationally.
: : :&nbsp:In Conference games only, her league-leading 67 saves is nearly double Northwestern's Annabel Skubisz, who is second with 38. Her .779 save percentage in Conference games ranks third, and her shots faced (155) in B1G play is more than one-third more than Iowa's Mia Magnotta's 105.

Emma O'Neill maintains the team's scoring lead (5-11-16, 13th B1G), with classmate Ellie Rutherford (4-6-14. T-18th) right behind. Rutherford leads the team in assists, while O'Neill shares the team's goal-scoring lead with classmate Maddie Lawlor (5-3-13) and sophomore Bianca Pizano. Those are career bests in all those categories for these Spartans.

• Freshmen Carmen Pucheta and Lilian Knorr are tied for fifth on the team in scoring, each with four goals and a pair of assists. Pucheta had goals against both Penn State and Iowa, with her goal against the Hawkeyes coming in OT to earn the win for MSU. MSU's eight game-winning goals this season have all come from different players.

OTHER MSU SPORTS Former Iconic MSU and HOF Wrestling Coach Grady Peninger has died. (11 National Championships, 43 Conference Championships, 46 All-Americans)

Only once, in a span of more than 30 years, did the NCAA team title escape from the states of Oklahoma and Iowa. And it took a native Oklahoman, Grady Peninger, to carry the trophy off to Michigan State. His 1967 Spartans, featuring individual champs Dale Anderson and George Radman, provided just one of the highlights of his 40-year career.

He reached national prominence while still in high school in Tulsa, winning the state championship and the first of two National AAU crowns during his senior year of 1945. After a two-year hitch in the Navy, he enrolled at Oklahoma State, and was an NCAA finalist in '49.

He entered high school coaching at Ponca City, Oklahoma, and in eight years guided three state champion teams. His stars included Shelby Wilson and Doug Blubaugh, who went on to earn Olympic gold medals and win their way into the Hall of Fame.

In 1960, he was called by Michigan State to assist, soon to succeed, Fendley Collins at the helm. Peninger's teams dominated the Big Ten Conference, winning seven consecutive titles starting in 1966. He was voted national coach of the year after the '67 triumph. He was the first Big Ten coach to develop a three-time NCAA champion, Greg Johnson, and a four-time NCAA finalist, Pat Milkovich. Don Behm was an Olympic silver medalist, and Tom Milkovich, won four conference titles.

In all, he produced 43 conference and 11 national champions, 90 Big Ten medalists and 46 All-Americans. His Spartans won 213 of 330 dual meets and enjoyed 23 consecutive winning seasons.

Peninger was president of the National Wrestling Coaches Association. While serving on the NCAA rules committee, he pushed through an expanded consolation bracket in 1986, and the double elimination format in 1995, each creating more opportunity for the wrestlers.

His goal always has been to provide greater opportunity for wrestlers to succeed. In recognition of such leadership, Grady Peninger is honored as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

This will be the first Big Ten Championships with the four new B1G schools Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington. All 18 teams will have women's teams in competition, while 15 teams will have men's teams running.

The Big Ten has gotten even more competitive with the addition of the new schools, as Washington is currently ranked No. 2 in the women's rankings, while Oregon is No. 17. Last season, the men finished third, their best finish in the conference championship race since 2017. Andrew Nolan earned first-team All-Big Ten recognition with a sixth-place finish in the race. Alexander Penski also collected second-team All-Big Ten honors after finishing in the top 14. Both Nolan and Penski are back this season to lead an experienced men's group. ROSEMONT, Ill. - Seven Michigan State women's soccer players earned All-Big Ten postseason honors, as announced by the conference Friday.

MSU's seven all-conference honorees mark the most in program history, topping its previous high of six set in 2022.

Graduate midfielder Justina Gaynor landed a spot on the first team for the third-straight year, joining MSU Hall of Famer Laura (Heyboer) Heethius as the second Spartan to collect three or more First Team All-Big Ten Honors. The Shelby Township, Michigan, native has played in 17 of MSU's 18 matches this season, totaling 14 points from four goals and a team-high six assists. All four of Gaynor's goals this season have been game-winners.

Junior defender Maggie Illig and graduate forward Meg Hughes were recognized as Second Team All-Big honorees, each earning their first All-B1G postseason honors. Illig, a native of Troy, Missouri, is in her second season in a starting center back role after playing her first season at MSU as a forward. She has played in all 18 matches for the Spartans this season and has totaled 1,346 minutes, the most of any field player. Illig has registered three points this season from one goal and one assist and has helped the Spartans to 10 shutouts.

Hughes, a graduate transfer and four-time All-BIG EAST selection at Providence, leads MSU in scoring (19 points) and goals scored (7) this season. The Rochester, Massachusetts, native has played in all 18 games for the Spartans this season and made 17 starts.

Sophomore midfielder Bella Najera collected Third Team All-Big Ten honors for the second-consecutive season. Najera, who hails from St. Charles, Illinois, is one of three Spartans to start in all 18 games this season. She has totaled 14 points from six goals and a pair of assists to rank second on the team in scoring.

Graduate goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks joined Najera on the All-Big Ten Third Team, earning her first all-conference award. In her second season as a Spartan, the Upper Marlboro, Maryland, native has been unstoppable in goal, registering eight shutouts and 10 wins. Parks holds a 0.75 goals-against average and 0.848 save percentage this season and was twice named Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week in 2024. She also became the first Spartan goalkeeper to score a goal after converting on a penalty kick at Ohio State on Sept. 26.

For the first time since 2006 (Lauren Sinacola and Lauren Hill), MSU had multiple players named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Midfielder Kaleigh McPherson captured the honor, while defender Julia Belli was the only freshman in the league to receive a unanimous selection to the team. Belli has started every game on the back line for MSU, registering two points from one goal in 1,313 minutes played. McPherson, who earned the starting role as a defensive midfielder in 12 of MSU's last three games, scored her first collegiate goal against Purdue in MSU's regular-season finale to recieve Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on Oct. 29.

The Big Ten also recognized 18 Sportsmanship Award honorees, with one representative from each institution. Each student-athlete chosen has distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. Each student-athlete must also be in good academic standing and demonstrate good citizenship outside of the competition field. Graduate midfielder Gabby Mueller was honored as MSU's 2024 recipient.

Fourth-seeded MSU opens Big Ten Tournament play against fifth-seeded Rutgers on Saturday, Nov. 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET from Minnesota's Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
