OTHER SCHOOLS: National Championship Game Predictions

I went 0-2 in the semifinal picks (yikes). I think everyone here hopes I miss on my pick once again...

It will be a clash of styles in Houston. I expect Washington’s offense to be one-dimensional but the pure skill of Michael Penix Jr & the UW WRs will allow the Huskies to hang.

I think the UW defense will have a hard time stopping Blake Corum. JJ McCarthy will also make a few big throws to force the UW defense to respect his arm.

It will be a back & forth game throughout. For UW to win, I think the Huskies need to win the turnover battle & Penix needs to play like he did against Texas. I don’t see UM making many mistakes.

Wolverines eek out a a tight game and win their first National Championship since 1997.

Washington 31
Michigan 34

Anyone taking the Huskies?

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Maryland Preview

MEN'S BASKETBALL Michigan State falls at Northwestern, 88-74 (game recap)

Doing recaps when MSU loses is no fun, but here you are:

The game was obviously lost in the final 10 minutes of the first half, and maybe even in the final 1:30. Hoggard had a steal which could have cut the lead to five points, but instead the ball was deflected, NU winds up hitting a three, and MSU never got closer than 10 points for the rest of the night.

Turnovers and giving up offensive rebounds were major issues in the first half, but those got better in the second half. MSU's defense, however, was pretty bad all night. NU shot 54% in both halves, got in the lane all night, and had WAY too many open threes. That is not good enough.

Then, Hall gives MSU literally nothing? Here is another fun stat, Jaden Akins' plus-minus on the night was a shocking -32 in 32 minutes. I am not sure how that it even possible for a guy that scored 13 points.

Next up is a game at Illinois. Cool, cool, cool.

FOOTBALL Michigan State 2024 signee Justin Denson to play in All-American bowl today

Michigan State 2024 defensive back signee Justin Denson Jr. will play in the All-American Bowl at 1 p.m. Eastern Time today (Saturday, Jan. 6.) in San Antonio. The game will be broadcast on NBC.

He will play for the East team and wear No. 12.

He will head to Michigan State shortly afterward. Denson will arrive in East Lansing as an enrollee.

MEN'S BASKETBALL 0 for Illinois

This is a maddening, inconsistent team. I thought that we had turned the corner and expected a W versus Northwestern. I want to read how Izzo is going to explain this brutal loss.
Now we go to Champaign to play a team that beat Northwestern by 30 and gave Purdue all they could handle even without Shannon, their best player. I expect another beat dow.

RECRUITING Michigan State adds 2024 preferred walk-on defensive back DJ Kennard

Michigan State is adding class of 2024 defensive back DJ Kennard to its roster as a preferred walk-on. Kennard announced his intention to join the Spartans on Sunday.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Kennard played both cornerback and free safety during his post-graduate year at Palmetto Prep Academy in Columbia, South Carolina in 2023. He helped lead the minutemen to a perfect 8-0 record this past season.

"I have chosen Michigan State for the great opportunity I am offered at this university as a student-athlete, and fully believe MSU will help me reach my goals and potential at all sides of life," Kennard told Spartans Illustrated.

He arrived to campus on Jan. 5 as an early enrollee.

OFF TOPIC: Help me understand this -

Explain to me this: Toward the end of Terminator 2, the T-1000 has Sara cornered, he put his knife through her arm, and he tells her to call for John. We know already that the T-1000 is a shapeshifter and can essentially clone any other living being (at least humans) and mimic their voices perfect, the same as the original Terminator. So why does he do that? Is he taunting her and forcing her into a situation where she is going to save her life but give up her son’s? It’s sort of nonsensical but I think plays somewhat well in the man v. machines theme. We know that the T-1000 was a bit cheeky with some of his gestures and facial expressions, so had he evolved into more human thinking whilst being around humans during his mission? Thoughts?

RECRUITING Michigan State early enrollees for the 2024 class

Michigan State currently has nine signees that plan to be mid-year enrollees, Per MSU Athletics.

DB Justin Denson Jr.
QB Ryland Jessee
OL Charlton Luniewski
OL Mercer Luniewski
WR Nick Marsh
QB Alessio Milivojevic
LB Brady Pretzlaff
DB Jaylen Thompson
RB Brandon Tullis

ATH Jadyn Walker is the last commit that is yet to sign his Letter of Intent. He is expected to sign with his school of choice in February. While Walker is committed to Michigan State, USC is making a late push to land Walker.

OTHER SCHOOLS: Michigan winning the Natty will help the Big Ten?

Ohio State is the only other team besides Michigan's 1997 1/2 national championship to win a national championship in the modern era of college football. In fact, I think MSU is the only other Big Ten team to win a national championship (or at least be voted national champions) since the 1950s. Does Michigan winning the natty elevate the conference and will it ultimately and indirectly help MSU? I hate Michigan more than anything and am sickened that they are this successful but there's no denying the positives of them winning a national championship. The SEC has dominated college football for decades and it was actually somewhat satisfying to see Alabama get beaten so soundly, although if it wasn't going to be us then I would have preferred it to be the Buckeyes.

TRANSFER PORTAL BREAKING: Michigan State lands Oregon State transfer IOL Tanner Miller

The former walk-on was named to the All-Pac-12 first team by the Associated Press and was a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy this season.

OTHER MSU SPORTS Wrestling Wins Seven Straight in 28-12 Victory over American University, 30-11 win over Ohio

EAST LANSING, Mich.—Michigan State wrestling are the winners of six-straight duals, with four Spartans earning bonus point victories on Friday night en route to a 28-12 win over American in the home opener inside Jenison Field House.

The Spartans improve their record to 6-0 while the Eagles drop to 4-5.

American elected to begin at 133-pounds and jumped to an early 6-0 lead with a first period fall at the 1:50 minute mark.

From there it was all Michigan State in the next four matches. Redshirt senior 141-pounder Jordan Hamdan got the Spartans in the win column for the first time of the night with a late third period takedown as he took an 8-4 decision. At the 141-weight class, redshirt freshman Braden Stauffenberg was able to tie the dual following a 5-2 decision to earn his third dual win of the season.

Senior 165-pounder Caleb Fish and 157-pound senior Chase Saldate each claimed bonus point victories to help MSU cruise away from the visiting team. Fish improved to 6-0 in dual matches while earning his fifth shutout match blanking Breon Phifer en route to an 8-0 major decision.

Saldate picked up the only fall of the night for the Spartans. With what looked to be a potential tech fall victory, Saldate cradled American's Devon Capato to his shoulders in the final minute to earn his fifth fall of the year.

American took the 174-pound bout but would drop matches to Michigan State at 184 and 197 pounds, with Layne Malczewski winning by major decision and Kael Wisler following it up with a tech fall performance. At heavyweight, redshirt freshman Josh Terrill would add on to his DI-best win total (22) by winning in a thrilling sudden victory period against Will Jarrell, 6-3.

The night ended with two nationally ranked 125-pounders going head-to-head, with No. 32-ranked redshirt junior Tristan Lujan and No. 16-ranked Jack Maida. Lujan took a 1-0 lead into the third period, but a Maida reversal secured the 2-1 victory for the Eagles.

MSU will have a quick turnaround as they host Ohio University tomorrow, Jan. 6 at 5 p.m.

I'm looking to pull the trigger on a Sience Longmill and it seems that most of the projects I would like to take on involve Spartan imagery. I know the bitmap to gsender learning curve is a bit steep, so if anyone has ready to carve files of the Spartan Helmut or gruff sparty you are willing to share I will reciprocate as i get futher along in the process.

GYMNASTICS Women's Gymnastics: Kellerman’s Perfect 10.0 Highlights No. 11 Michigan State’s Season Opener at Super 16

LAS VEGAS – Sophomore Sage Kellerman scored a perfect 10.000 on vault to lead No. 11 Michigan State gymnastics to a third-place 196.300 finish at the Super 16 Friday night in Las Vegas in the Spartans' season opener.

No. 1 Oklahoma, the defending back-to-back national champions, took the win with a 197.850, while No. 11 Kentucky posted a 196.775 to secure second. No. 6 Michigan finished fourth with a 195.875.

"I'm really proud of them for coming back from where they did and how they finished," said head coach Mike Rowe. "Knowing we could still make it up on vault and bars, it came together in the end."

The Spartans opened the meet on beam with a 48.800. Juniors Skyla Schulte and Gabrielle Stephen posted the top two scores for MSU with a 9.875 and 9.850, respectively. Senior Giana Kalefe posted a 9.750 in the leadoff spot, while sophomore Nikki Smith scored a 9.700 and senior Delanie Harkness earned a 9.625.

Making her first appearance in the floor lineup since the 2023 Big Ten Championships, sophomore Elle Beaufait led the Spartans to a 48.800 on floor with a team-high 9.800 in the leadoff spot. Her perfect score is the fourth on vault and fifth overall for MSU.

MSU ended the night with its best event score of the meet on bars, scoring a 49.450 for the second-best team score on the event behind Oklahoma.
