UPDATE NCAA signs new media rights deal for championship broadcasts

"The NCAA on Thursday said it had reached an eight-year agreement with ESPN worth $115 million annually to televise 40 college sports championships each year, including the marquee Division I women’s basketball tournament that many people within college sports had hoped would be primed for even bigger returns given a wave of recent popularity."

Article goes on to mention:

"The NCAA’s current contract with ESPN, which was extended in 2011 and runs through the end of this season, brings in $34 million per year and includes 29 championships."

And that a 2021 study claimed the NCAA could earn as much as $81 million per year on a media deal for WBB if it was unbundled, though skeptics in the industry believed that was overly inflated.

"Ultimately, the NCAA and ESPN agreed to keep the bundle and valued the women’s basketball tournament at about $65 million per year under its portion of the agreement."

RECRUITING Updated: Inside Aidan Chiles' Journey to Michigan State: He 'has found his people'

There is an article from On3 going around that USC head coach Lincoln Riley has identified Aidan Chiles as a potential transfer portal quarterback target. The article also says the Trojans may be pursuing two transfer quarterbacks. It isn't entirely surprising to me that USC would be interested in an incredibly talented southern California transfer quarterback, especially since the the team is in dire need of quarterbacks.

A source told Spartans Illustrated earlier this week that USC was pursuing Chiles, according to an agent on the West Coast.

I have been told that Chiles has been respectful about taking calls from others coaches and would listen, but that Jonathan Smith is "his guy" and "his person." Chiles wants to play for Smith.

I have also been told by sources extremely close to Chiles that the USC report is "bananas" and "I"m not worried. Let people speculate. Aidan is committed to MSU."

So, things can always change, but I don't expect anything to come of this. He plans to arrive at Michigan State on Jan. 4 and begin classes on Jan. 8.

Update: I have a feature story on Aidan's journey, told through the eyes of his parents, right here:

OTHER MSU SPORTS Wrestling Places Fourth at Midlands Championships

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Six Michigan State Spartans – 125-pound redshirt junior Tristan Lujan, 141-pounder senior Jordan Hamdan, 157-pound senior Chase Saldate, 165-pound senior Caleb Fish, 197-pound redshirt freshman Kael Wisler, and 285-pound redshirt freshman Josh Terrill – each had individual place finishes at the two-day Ken Kraft Midlands Championships this weekend.

MSU finished fourth out of 49 total participating squads with a total team score of 84.5.

Hamdan and Fish were the two highest place finishes, each finishing fifth in their respective weight classes.

Hamdan (Hudson, Mich.) went 6-2 over the weekend. The senior dropped his second match on Friday to Evan Mougalian (Penn RTC) in a 9-5 decision. In the consolation rounds, Hamdan won four-straight matches that was highlighted with his biggest win of the year, defeating No. 23-ranked Dylan Layton out of Cleveland State in a 14-2 major decision. Hamdan controlled Layton the entire seven minutes of wrestling recording four takedowns and allowing Layton's only points coming off two escapes in the third period. Hamdan would fall to Tom Crook in an 8-2 decision in the consolation semifinal match then captured fifth with a medical forfeit.

No. 10-ranked Fish (Eaton Rapids, Mich.) started his weekend off to a fast start with his fastest fall of the season defeating Air Force's Jack Ganos in 54 seconds, advancing to the quarterfinals where he defeated Harvard's Josh Kim in a 2-0 decision. After falling to Peyton Hall from West Virginia, and Beau Mantanona (Michigan), the senior captain would win his fifth-place match for his third-straight tournament podium finish.

No. 16-ranked Saldate (Gilroy, Calif.) went 5-2 overall with a pair of first round falls over Jorden Johnson (SIU Edwardsville) at the 1:50 mark, and James Harrington (Harvard) in a season-high 1:07, followed by tech fall and major decision victories to capture seventh.

Terrill (Holt, Mich.) entered the week tied second in the country in wins (16) and added five more wins to that total recording two falls and major decision victories. Terrill registered the second fastest fall on the team in his seventh-place match against John Stout (Penn) in 28 seconds for his third tournament placement this season.

No. 32-ranked Lujan (Selma, Calif.) placed eighth with back-to-back tech fall victories against Davian Guanajuato (SIU Edwardsville), 17-2, and a 15-0 shutout over Kaden Chinavare (Central Michigan). In a razor-thin seventh-place match, Lujan fell to Ohio State's Vinny Kilkeary in a sudden-victory match, 4-1, to finish eighth.

Wisler (New Boston, Mich.) went 4-3 overall to place eighth. In the consolation round of six, Wisler met No. 32-ranked John Crawford (Franklin & Marshall) for the second time this season, and defeated Crawford for the second time this season in a tight 4-1 tiebreaker battle.

The Michigan State wrestling team will be back in action on Jan. 5 as it takes on American in East Lansing.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Michigan State Men's Basketball Confidence Report: Post-December

A roller coaster of a month for head coach Tom Izzo and the Michigan State men's basketball team in December should prepare the Spartans for what will likely be another fun (?) Big Ten season.

It’s well documented what this program can do when it is counted out. Now, moving forward, the Spartans finally have a bit of momentum to move them through the beginning of the Big Ten gauntlet.

Let’s take a look at how some of the current players are trending entering the new year.

More here:

OTHER SCHOOLS: I would not be surprised if we see Josh Schertz

Indiana States HC coaching at a BIG Time school soon. I came away so impressed from two games so far this year when it comes to the other schools. They both are coached so well... JMU and this Sycamores team.

Very well coached... I just hope they dont come to the B1G. :)

RECRUITING Louisville transfer defensive lineman Jeff Clark will take official visit to Michigan State on Jan. 4

Louisville transfer defensive tackle Jeff Clark will take an official visit to Michigan State beginning on Thursday, Jan. 4 and going until Saturday, Jan. 6. Spartan Tailgate's Corey Robinson was first on the report.

He appeared in 13 games as a reserve defensive tackle for the Cardinals in 2023, recording 14 total tackles and two tackles for loss. He is listed at 6-foot and 290 pounds.

Prior to his time at Louisville, Clark played three seasons at Georgia State. He finished his career there with 19.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks, which ranked top-10 in program history.

Here are my score predictions:

Michigan: 21

Texas: 34
Washington: 27

Gimme an Alabama vs. Texas rematch in the National Championship!

Drop your score predictions. I think these two matchups will be exciting to watch.

FOOTBALL My behind the scenes look at Jonathan Smith's first month

Good Friday afternoon to you all. I've spent quite a bit of time trying to get a good sense of what the last 30 days was like under Jonathan Smith and I think you will enjoy this Spartans Illustrated subscriber exclusive. In order to tell the story most effectively, I talked with a handful of sources in the football program and granted them anonymity so they could speak freely; some were already on the Spartan staff when Jonathan Smith arrived and some arrived with Smith. If you have any follow up questions, hit me up here. I'm on vacation with my family, but should have time to get back to you!

FOOTBALL Michigan State running back Jaren Mangham announces return for 2024

Running back Jaren Mangham will return to Michigan State in 2024, he announced on Tuesday evening. It will mark Mangham's sixth year of college football and his second with the Spartans.

It was previously unclear if Mangham planned to return to MSU, enter the transfer portal again or pursue professional football, but he will be a part of the Spartans' backfield in 2024.

OTHER SCHOOLS: DeBoer almost blew it

Maybe I should be blaming his OC instead but there were a couple of head shaking play calls late in that game.

1. Up 9 with a little over two minutes left. Instead of running they throw an incompletion that saves Texas a timeout.
2. Up 6 with under a minute left and Texas out of timeouts. Instead of taking a knee and running the clock down to 15 seconds they risk a handoff. Not only does their best running back get injured on the play, but Texas gets an extra 35 seconds from the injury stoppage and ends up with four shots at the end zone.

It’s hard for me to imagine what they were thinking.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Photo Gallery: Indiana State vs. Michigan State - Dec. 30, 2023

On Dec. 30, the Michigan State men's basketball squad earned a hard-fought win over an Indiana State team that entered East Lansing with an impressive 11-1 record. The Spartans took down the Sycamores by a final score of 87-75.

The Red Cedar Radar is back with football and hoops updates

Sydney and I recorded back-to-back episodes of the Red Cedar Radar on NYE. The first part focused just on football, where we dive into the first month of the Jonanthan Smith era. Part two is all about basketball, where we talk about the current MSU win streak and what to expect in Big Ten play.

FOOTBALL Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Tunmise Adeleye is no longer with Michigan State

Spartans Illustrated can confirm that redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Tunmise Adeleye is no longer on Michigan State's roster. He is not in the transfer portal as of yet.
